The Role

Here at Pool House Vets, we have a fantastic opportunity for an enthusiastic Vet to join our busy Ambulatory Practice. Following the relocation of one of our long-term employees, we need a vet who is anxious to develop the skills needed in ambulatory practice and relishes the challenge of overseeing their own cases. Our ambulatory vets are supported by a large team of specialists, residents, and interns at our clinic, whilst having a wide range of equine clientele from leading show jumpers to child’s first pony.

This role is 100% EQUINE, based primarily in our ambulatory practice, we are happy to offer a competitive salary for this role of up to £50,000 depending on experience.

In addition to the normal work of a Veterinary Surgeon you will participate in an Out of Hours Rota – which will involve:

  • Fourteen weekends per year of which: Approx. ten are full weekends (Sat and Sunday) and two are half weekends (Saturday with a second call duty on Sunday), two reserved weekends (which may not be required).
  • You will be entitled to a day off in lieu of each weekend worked on ‘first call’ i.e., Sunday to be taken usually on the following Friday (except where special circumstances prevail). A further day off in lieu for each ‘second call’ weekend (may be added together to create whole days off) to be taken on a mutually agreed day.
  • Night duties Mon – Thursday in the week following a duty first call weekend – finishing at 9 am and starting at 4.30 pm. You will not be required to work during the daytime hours of the practice whilst you are on ‘night duty’.
  • It may be expected that one village show or similar event per year will be covered, in exchange for time off or the associated fee.
  • Usually, 1 cover duty per week when not on night duty. (This will vary during holiday periods). Cover duties are from 5.00 pm – 7.30 pm.

The equine veterinary team consists of 21 full-time vets, of which are six residents and five interns. We have two European Diplomats in Equine Surgery. One European Diplomat in Equine Dentistry and one part-time European Diplomat in Equine Internal Medicine. There are five other RCVS certificate holders.

On our staff, we have two specialists in equine surgery and one in dentistry. We have residents in sports medicine, surgery, dentistry, and internal medicine. We have embedded University of Nottingham specialists in equine medicine, and all our clinical directors hold RCVS certificates in equine practice and other relevant disciplines. The practice has been established in the local community for more than 150 years and has many connections to community activities including the annual Sheriffs ride and many local equestrian events. We have won the Lichfield Cathedral best Christmas Tree competition every year for the last 7 years (except in 2020 when it was cancelled due to Covid). We provide speakers for school events and sponsor community activities. We are a 'green' practice with our own solar farm and use air source heat pumps for our energy, and we are gradually switching to electric vehicles.
