The Practice

Bicester Vets is a large independent, single-site, RCVS accredited small animal veterinary hospital providing our own out-of-hours care with onsite overnight nursing.  As the last truly Independent small animal practice in our area, we are able to offer our vets the clinical freedom to work up and treat cases as they see fit without the need to meet specific targets. We strive to provide an excellent standard of care for our clients and their pets and see an extremely varied and interesting case load which we work-up to a high level.

“I consider the service we offer to be at an almost referral level, and to do that, everyone works very hard, as a team. The benefit of that hard work is the range of cases you see and skills you get to learn and use. No one gets pushed to the side, everyone gets a fair opportunity to do those cases.

Those with experience are happy to pass those skills on to other members of the team. A new or recent graduate can be sure that they are going to be supported and gain the skills they need to become excellent vets. A more experienced vet can be sure that they are going to be able to see the cases they want to and that our client base trusts us to work up these cases to a very high standard in house.” Helen Walton-Collett BVM BVS PGCertSA Ophthal MRCVS Nottingham 2012 Advanced Practitioner

We hold clinical rounds every morning to discuss cases in the hospital and have monthly social in house CPD sessions covering a variety of topics.

“I think we are a good team, helping each other out, collaborating with cases so that we all learn, and do the best for our patients.  There is an atmosphere of enthusiasm to learn and develop, as individuals, and as a practice and enjoy a good rapport between ACAs, nurses, vets, reception and office staff.  Everyone has pulled together during hard times, through COVID and pressured days; there is support within the practice and from the Directors.” Rachel Marsden – MA VetMB CertVC MRCVS – Advanced Practitioner

The Role

  • Normal week is a 4-day week (day off changes)
  • 1:6 rota of 5-day week of nights (2pm-9pm shift then on call until 8.30am the following morning). The overlap with the day shift enables collaboration and continuity for the night shift.
  • 1:6 rota of weekend on duty (8.30am-2.00pm Saturday shift then on call until 8.30am on Monday morning)
  • 1:6 rota of Saturday consulting (8.30am-2.00pm)
  • Once we’ve recruited the right candidate, we plan to change this to a 1 in 7 rota
  • There is a nurse at the practice 24/7 to take calls, provide nursing assistance to the vet and to give 24 hr nursing care for inpatients. ACAs are around on weeknights till 10pm to support the night nurse and ensure all is ready for the next day.

Vets are provided with a mentor when they join the practice to ensure a smooth introduction to the practice and we can provide as much support as you want and need. We are prepared to provide external personal development training such as the Vet Dynamics Vet Academy to enhance your working experience and improve resilience and confidence.

We have a great team of receptionists, RVNs, student nurses and animal care assistants. You will get plenty of opportunity to develop your surgical, medical and imaging abilities with experienced vets available to guide and support you as required. We encourage case continuity, and you will have the opportunity to work up and manage your cases fully with support available including daily rounds and ad-hoc discussions as necessary.

We have an incredible, supportive team of people at the practice, and we are very proud of the work we do. Our Vet team frequently socialise together and Elliot’s recent back garden BBQ was a huge success despite the inclement weather!

You will need to be a team player and be willing to integrate into our friendly, collaborative team. You will be able to pursue any clinical interest that you wish with support provided as necessary.
