Veterinary Nurse – Emergency and Critical Care (ECC)
UE05 Up to £18,051 per annum, depending upon experience for 10-hour rolling shifts worked 4 shifts on, 8 shifts off, which is equivalent to an average 23.3 hours per week.
Open-ended, part time contract
Shift times 11am-10pm (with 1h unpaid lunch)
3 new posts available, to make up 365 days of cover, paid overtime accrued for any additional shift cover

The Opportunity:
We have a fantastic opportunity for three nurses to join our established Emergency and Critical Care (ECC) nursing team here at the Hospital for Small Animals (HfSA) on a rolling rota, 4 shifts on, 8 shifts off. With the recent addition of our Emergency Room and expanding case load, we are looking for candidates who are passionate about providing state-of-the-art nursing for critically ill and emergent patients.
We are open to emergencies 24/7, so part of the role is to support the growing out of hours emergency referrals we see, involving triage, stabilisation and longer term care of our critically ill patients.

As part of this role, you will cover the annual leave for your colleagues, accruing paid overtime for all additional hours worked. Successful candidates will be highly motivated to take their career forward by helping us develop and teach critical care nursing within our hospital.
Prior nursing experience in a busy emergency room and/or in a referral hospital is essential. An advanced diploma in veterinary nursing or advanced certificate in ECC Nursing is preferable, as is previous teaching experience.

We have a generous external CPD allowance, paid CPD days and abundant free internal CPD for clinical staff.
No additional on call is required, however you will cover holidays in your pod, accruing paid overtime for any additional hours worked.
Holiday entitlement of 32 days + 4 days of public holiday per annum (pro rata), rising to 36 days + 4 days public holiday after 5 years’ service (pro rata)
Your skills and attributes for success:
- Being an RCVS registered veterinary nurse is essential
- Excellent organisational and communications skills are essential
- Keen dedication to teaching the next generation of veterinary surgeons and veterinary nurses is a must.

William Dick was an outstanding practitioner who made great strides in establishing veterinary education in Scotland. Besides setting up the School in 1823, he was appointed Veterinary Surgeon in Scotland to Queen Victoria in 1844.
By the time of his death in 1866, the 818 students he had taught were to be found throughout the world. Among them were the founders of veterinary schools in Glasgow, Liverpool, Ireland, Canada, the USA and Australia.
Clyde Street Veterinary College
In the autumn of 1829 William Dick’s lectures were given in Clyde Street, probably in the old building at number 8. It was in Clyde Street that Dick first trained as a farrier at his father's forge.
