The Role

Here at Highcliff Vets, we are looking for a part-time Veterinary Surgeon to join our established, friendly, supportive team, who enjoys the challenges of first opinion veterinary practice as well as guiding recent graduates. A typical day starts at 08:15am with reassessing any patients returning from Vets Now and admitting patients for operations. All patient admissions are made by the veterinary team allowing our dedicated team of Registered Veterinary Nurses to focus on caring for our in-patients and preparing our day patients for surgery.

We offer 15-minute appointments as a minimum to allow Vets to provide a first-class service to clients and appointments are available for clients throughout the day with vets having staggered breaks throughout the day. Typically, you would have one session on "operations” each week allowing you to book in cases you have seen to operate on or work up; seeing cases through is encouraged in an environment where plenty of support is available if required. The final appointments of the day are booked for 18:45pm allowing ample time in the evenings to maintain a healthy work-life balance and there is no sole-charge work.

This is a part-time position, working 18.75 hours a week over 2 days. There will be 1 in 3 Saturdays mornings until 13:00pm.

The salary will be up to £31,200 PA depending on experience. There is a welcome bonus and relocation package on offer!

About Us

We are a purpose-built practice overlooking the beautiful Stour Estuary. Situated in the heart of Constable Country, the beautiful scenery made famous by the work of John Constable is close by for those who like outdoor life; the coast and Alton Water Reservoir is also on hand for those who enjoy life on the water.

The surgery is fully equipped including digital radiography (including separate dental radiography in a bespoke dental suite), ultrasonography, piped gases, multi-parameter monitor, flexible and rigid endoscopy, cautery, class IV laser therapy, tonometry, and forced-air warming for patients.

Manningtree and Mistley, just a stone's throw across the Stour Estuary from the practice, have great independent shops, bars, pubs, bakery, and restaurants as well as a supermarket and main-line rail station, with Liverpool Street just an hour away. We are midway between Ipswich and Colchester and each town offers plenty of opportunity for sporting and cultural pursuits, between them being home to Ipswich Town Football Club, Dance East, Mercury, and Wolsey Theatres as well as the fabulous Colchester Zoo. Stansted Airport is in easy reach at 50mins by car and the port of Harwich is just 15 miles away for those who enjoy travel to Europe and beyond.

There are five FTE Veterinary Surgeons, clinically supported by seven FTE Registered Veterinary Nurses as well as six Support Staff. Practice Management is shared with the site surgery at Hadleigh, some nine miles away.

Certificate study is encouraged, be that RCVS Cert AVP or GP Certificates; recently completed and in-progress Certificates include Medicine, Surgery and ECC. Within our team, we have a certificate holder in imaging which allows internal referral for more in-depth abdominal ultrasound in particular, and a monthly visit from a Cardiology Diplomate not only provides excellent care for our patients but allows up-skilling of Cardiology knowledge within the team.

We pride ourselves on our friendly, collaborative approach as we believe that allows us to best care for our patients and ourselves. We do a lot of work with local Cat Rescue Charities and regularly see Greyhound Trust dogs. We have for several years supported a local charity providing care and accommodation for adults with learning disabilities and like to attend local agricultural shows.

Applicant Requirements

Prior experience of veterinary work in the UK is required and ideally, the successful candidate may hold or have started a Certificate although consideration will be given to less experienced Veterinary Surgeons demonstrating a genuine passion for first-opinion veterinary care.

Company

The Highcliff Veterinary Practice is a long-established reputable local practice serving south Suffolk and the Essex-border area. We offer many products and services to help domestic pets. Whether you have a hamster or a Great Dane, we are here to help!

The origins of Highcliff Veterinary Practice can be traced from the first half of the nineteenth century, from the Grimwade family of Farriers, Horse Doctors and Insurers. They lived and worked in Kersey, and as was traditional at this time, a horse's tail hung outside the house to enable clients to recognise the trade. This still remains today hanging from the eves of a house near the ford in the village. The practice moved to Hadleigh after the Second World War. Three generations of the Lemon family (George, Alfred and Donald), worked locally from 1870 until Donald retired in 1977.

By this time the practice had grown considerably. A branch in Ipswich had been established from partner Roy Hullis' home in St Johns Rd and this moved to new premises in Cliff Lane in the early 1970s. The name was changed from Lemon, Sutherland, Ryde and partners to Highcliff Veterinary Practice, the name deriving from the premises at High Street, Hadleigh and Cliff Lane, Ipswich.

The Ipswich surgeries have been under separate ownership outwith Highcliff Veterinary Practice since the Summer of 2014 meaning the practice is now composed of branches in Hadleigh and at Factory Lane, Cattawade, Brantham near Manningtree.
