We’re looking for an additional vet, either full or part-time to join our team. We’re an independent, 6 (hoping to be 7) vet, family-run, RCVS accredited, small animal practice situated in the Heart of the National Forest. So, if you want to join a practice where your voice will be heard and your opinion valued, please read on!

Our team are amazing – and we are really proud of them. We support each other and play to each other’s strengths allowing us to deliver the best possible care to our patients and their owners. It’s this incredible teamwork cockburn best practice that we believe led to us being awarded the Best UK Vet Award two years in a row ( 2021 & 2022), which now the covid restrictions allow we’re really looking forward to celebrating with a spa day.

Work-life balance is really important to us, and our team have input into their working hours, and they have helped to design the current rota with a mix of early and late shifts to allow life to be fully enjoyed outside work. Full time vets currently work 40 hours per week with time during the working day allocated to allow phone calls to be made and to ensure everyone finishes on time more often than not. Vets work 2 Saturday mornings in 6 finishing at 1.30pm. We have no Sunday or Bank Holiday surgeries, and our out-of-hours is looked after by a local OOH provider. Consultations are 15 minutes long with double appointments booked for longer procedures such as euthanasia’s. Ops days are shared equally between team members with 2 vets on ops each day.

As we are able to be flexible with working hours, we’re happy to consider either full time or part time applicants; and with all our current team happy to perform operations we’re also open to applications from candidates who’d prefer to only consult.

This is how Kostas, one of our vets, described his time working working as part of our team “For me, working at Cockburn Vets could (even) be described as a #vetlife-changing experience! If you are looking for a place to mould you as a Vet, strengthen your fundamentals and take you a step (or two) further, work with a (really!) wide variety of cases in a supportive and friendly, almost home-like, environment… well then Cockburn's is definitely the right place for you! In my six years of working at Cockburn Vets it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that the experience made me a better, stronger and more equipped veterinary professional."

We believe that personal and professional development are crucial and have built time for CPD into our rota. We have regular vet’s meetings and clinical clubs where we can chat through cases and share experiences and with Covid (hopefully) in retreat we’re looking forward to team members visiting conferences and events in-person once again. Our team members regularly attend BSAVA, BVA Live, Vets North and London Vet Show or other CPD courses of their choice. We’re also happy to support certificates and are part of Vet Dynamics and Vetsure’s Graduate Friendly Scheme.

We’re a Gold Standard Cat Friendly and Veterinary Nurse Training practice and like to keep up to date with the latest techniques.  We have a busy case load and our experienced team have the expertise to treat most cases in-house enhancing our job satisfaction. We pride ourselves in providing  innovative care such as laparoscopic spays and have lots of cockburn lap surgery equipment including blood pressure monitors in each consultation room; an in-house lab with blood and urine machines; an ultrasound with doppler plus linear and cardiac probes; rhino-, broncho- and gastroscopes; and a dental generator situated in our separate dental theatre. When we do need to refer, we have excellent relationships with our local referral centres.

We have a continuous improvement (CI) board where all team members post ideas to improve our practice (no idea is too small) and our vets have a budget to allow them to purchase equipment they feel would enhance our clinical services. We believe it’s important to be sustainable and we’re trying to make our practice greener through initiatives such as using Tuffies mattresses in all our kennels to reduce unnecessary washing.

With the workday finishing at 4.30pm each day 3 weeks out of every 6 there’s lots of time to explore the local area. Whilst we’re situated in a rural area we’re close to the bright lights of Leicester, Nottingham, Derby and Birmingham and there are fantastic road, air and rail links with central cockburn rural London only 90 minutes by train; and East Midlands and Birmingham airports close-by. There are excellent local leisure facilities in the National Forest and the nearby Peak District, and we’ve just had a fantastic new leisure centre open within a stone’s throw from the practice.

We are able to support new graduates and 2 of our team have the RCVS VetGDP advisor qualification. For more experienced vets we are also happy to support  someone who is looking to start a certificate in their area of interest.

The package on offer includes:

  • A salary of £32,500 for a new grad up to £60,000 for an experienced colleague.
  • £1200 CPD budget, certificates encouraged and funded
  • Company sick pay, workplace pension VDS fees and generous staff pet discount

Brilliant colleagues, lots of support, beautiful countryside, and LOTS of chocolates!  At our latest practice meeting we appointed a social secretary and have agreed an annual practice ‘play fund’. So if you would like to help us spend it, get in touch!

Please don’t hesitate to pick up the phone for an informal pre -application chat with any of our vet team or to submit your application please click the apply button. Alternatively for more details or an informal chat you can also call Dr Fiona Stephens.

Company

Cockburn Vets was established by Bob Cockburn in the 1930s. Since then, the practice has been an integral part of the community, caring for animals in the Coalville, Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Shepshed, Market Bosworth and Markfield areas. Today Cockburn Vets remains a small family-run business committed to providing the best comprehensive care for your pet. We aim to deliver the highest standard of medicine and treatment techniques backed by exceptional service. Our team has a high level of expertise, and we invest heavily to keep our equipment and our team knowledge base up-to-date.

In 2021 we won the Best UK Vet Awards. This prestigious national award recognises those vet practices delivering the highest levels of service to customers. The awards, organised by VetHelpDirect.com, are based on genuine pet owner reviews of veterinary practices around the United Kingdom. Despite being such a challenging year for vets and pet owners because of the coronavirus pandemic, there were 14,299 vet reviews received, increasing 22% on the previous year – and the highest ever! Thanks to the lovely reviews left by our valued customers, we were delighted to be voted Best Vets in Leicestershire and Best UK Vets 2021.

That’s why at our Coalville vet surgery, you’ll find a traditional and friendly welcome for you and your pets alike – backed by attentive, empathetic care and the latest equipment for swift diagnosis and treatment in even the most complex cases.
