Job Title: Veterinary surgeon

Salary: Up to £32,000 per annum (depending on experience)

Location: Park Vet Group – Leicestershire (Saffron Lane)  

Job Type: Permanent (part-time)

Hours: 25 Hours (1:4 weekend Saturday morning 8.30 – 14.00 and 1:16 8.30 – 19.00 and then Sunday 1:15 8.30 – 19.00)

Your role and responsibilities

To work closely with the Clinical Director, your veterinary colleagues and the management team, as well as all other support staff within the practice in order to provide the highest standards of professional care and service for our clients and their animals.

To maintain membership of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, be familiar with the legislation affecting the practice of veterinary medicine in the UK and with the ethics of practice as outlined in the RCVS Guide to Professional Conduct.

Assume responsibility for:

  • Surgical and medical cases whilst complying with the practice’s policies and protocols and ensuring all cases are written up in full daily
  • Maintaining a positive working relationship with colleagues, customers, and other stakeholders to promote and build the reputation of the practice
  • Working in accordance with and contribute to the practice policies and procedures and other relevant legislation to ensure operational requirements are met
  • Assist with the clinical training and development of veterinary nurses, trainees and other support staff within the practice, encouraging them to contribute fully to the work of the practice
  • Provide exemplary veterinary care for all clients in the examination, medical and surgical treatment of their animals
  • Examine and assess all in-patients at least twice a day ensuring the hospital records are fully updated by the nursing team and that the nurses are kept updated of any changes in medication or any change in the condition of the patient
  • Communicate effectively with clients, to make and answer calls as necessary and to answer queries in a timely manner
  • Communicate effectively with all colleagues to ensure the best possible treatments of all animals under the care of the practice
  • Responsible for the appropriate pricing of all clinical cases ensuring clients are aware of estimated costs and has been given options and a recommended course of action as stated in the RCVS Guide to Professional Conduct, thereby not exposing the client to unnecessary expenditure
  • Review and inform clients of the results of laboratory tests and clinical reports as soon as it is feasibly possible. Be prepared to advise whether further tests or actions are indicated and any escalation of costs and ensure all client records are updated accordingly
  • Make use of internal or external referral services as appropriate and seek advice or assistance of colleagues when needed
  • Attend regular CPD courses in order to maintain and increase veterinary skills and knowledge including taking part in in-house training, staff meetings and vets clinical discussion meetings and keeping up to date with clinical developments and legislation changes
  • Check all in-patients during out of hours working and before leaving ensure that on call arrangements are in place and ensure the security of the practice before leaving.
  • Make home visits as necessary within the allotted time ensuring that the practice guidelines on personal safety are always followed
  • Responsible for the safety of clients and employees within the practice when animals are being handled or treated, ensuring that the appropriate restraint (chemical if necessary) is used
  • Adhere to confidentiality relating to all aspect of the business including complying with and assisting with all requirements relating to GDPR compliance
