Job Details

Imagine working a 4 -minute walk from the beach, around a flexible work rota designed with your input to meet your individual needs, with no OOH, in a proudly independent practice that values the welfare and professional growth of all its staff members. Welcome to Andrew Mellor Vets, a thriving practice that has been serving the community for just under 50 years. Our dedication to the local community and their pets is the foundation of everything we do.

Andrew, born locally in Lytham, has worked with numerous vets across the Fylde coast before settling at David Wadsworth vets practice which he took over in 2012. Since then, the practice has increased in both size and standing and now has the facilities to accommodate 4 vets, alongside an outstanding reputation for individualised quality care.

Andrew MellorUnderpinning this is the calibre of our highly valued staff -most of whom have been with us for many years. As one vet noted "having such an amazing work family really has made a huge difference to my career."  In addition, we have a long-standing locum who has covered vet holidays for 9 years and who is in regular contact between visits, his thoughts about working with us are; 'After working all over the UK in several clinics I have found my ultimate best ‘permanent locum’ position!’ Mutual support and friendship is a core part of our team with days out walking in The Trough of Bowland; regular film nights; meals out and participation in events such as sponsored walks and cake sales to raise money for charity including cancer research. This is a charity very dear to our hearts and like many other families, has affected our vet family at Andrew Mellor Vets.

Naturally this support is a key aspect of the professional work arena with the practice training vet students, vet nurses and both formal and informal peer mentoring including weekly scheduled meetings. All our nurses are certificate level or working towards attaining this level. Andrew has a surgical bias with a huge interest and expertise in orthopaedics, thoracic and soft tissue surgery accepting referrals from other local practices. He is also a Vet GDP advisor. Andrew really enjoys teaching and is a supportive and encouraging mentor that will help grow your professional confidence.  Two vets have special interest in Internal Medicine; one is undertaking certificate training this year.  In addition, we work closely with the RSPCA, Homeless Hound charities and the proactive local authority dog wardens. Andrew is also the local authority vet for dog breeding and zoo inspections. Being open to all learning experiences that can improve an animal’s quality of life; Andrew qualified as a human K.O.R.E consultant therapist becoming the first veterinary surgeon K.O.R.E therapist in the world. He uses this with clinical acupuncture to complement traditional treatments on both animals and sometimes the staff! We also have state of the art equipment including university standard DR radiography, CR dental and 4 probe US with full cardiac capabilities.

Andrew MellorOur varied workload would suit either a new/recent graduate or seasoned vet who would like full or part time.  No OOH, 1:3 Saturday mornings 830am -1230pm, one 11am- 7:15pm finish per week and 5pm finishes the rest of the time. 2 out of 3 Fridays you’ll finish at 5pm or have a half day. As we are a flexible practice who work as a team, we’re really happy to find a rota that works well for your work life balance.

We also have protected lunch breaks as well as built in breaks throughout the day and dedicated time to make your calls and deal with admin. Our amazing practice manager Karen is our mother hen and looks after our diaries and rotas. She is always looking out for us, making sure that we have the time and head space to do our jobs well and enough down time to recharge.

  • Salary of £35,000 for new graduate up to £60,000 for an  experienced colleague
  • Potential of profit sharing above base salary
  • 7 weeks paid holiday including bank holidays
  • CPD funded to certificate level and access to Webinar vet
  • Accommodation is available
  • Professional memberships paid

Within an hour’s car drive you can be in the Lake District to the north; Yorkshire Dales to the east and Manchester to the south- that is if you get tired of the 12 miles of golden sandy beach, 300 metres from the surgery. Here you can have your lunch time stroll with your dog or borrow one of the staff ones that regularly accompany them to work. We love having staff pets at work and they are always welcome.

To see what we’re all about why not pick up the phone for an informal chat or come and spend the day with us, with all expenses paid.
