Job Details

At Abbey Veterinary Group, our independent family-run practice, we are passionate about supporting our team clinically and financially, and work extremely hard to offer a great work-life balance. We are really proud that our colleagues stay with us a long time, and about 80% of our team have been with us 15 years or more. None of our vets earn less than £50,000, even if they are more recently qualified. We offer 6 weeks holiday, a properly protected 2-hour lunch break every day, emergencies covered by a dedicated OOH provider and an alternating 37- or 30-hour work week.

This is how one of our lovely vets, Natalie describes how it is to work as part of the team here. Abbey Vets has been the best place to work for me. We have a fantastic, supportive team across all aspects of the practice that spend time together inside and outside of work. I am currently working on a certificate, and this has been encouraged from the get-go. It's lovely to be treated as person, they know my strengths and weaknesses, and I've had so much support over the years. I can't imagine myself working anywhere else’.

Like many practices, we started out as a single site clinic and have expanded over the years; our main surgery is in Barnsley, where we carry out all our ops, and we have 7 consulting branches that feed into this site. We are extremely well equipped with 5 operating theatres, DDR, video endoscopy, advanced ultrasound, orthopaedic kit etc.  We are also able to offer our own hydrotherapy and physiotherapy services.

Due to relocation, we are looking for a vet with some experience (but would definitely consider a confident 2021/2020+ graduate) to join our team of 14 vets.  Our exceptionally wide and varied caseload is ideal for developing and learning new skills. Within our team we have a variety of certificate holders including imaging and critical care, plus other vets with special interests in exotics, ophthalmology and orthopaedics. If there is an area you would like to continue studying in, we are absolutely able to support and fund certificates.

Abbey Vet Group Ltd

Our working rota consists of alternating 4-day (30hr) or 5-day (37hr) weeks, with one Saturday or Sunday per month (8am – 5pm)- i.e., 1:8 Saturdays and 1:8 Sundays. Vets Now cover our emergencies so there are no telephone calls / emergencies to handle at night and no new emergencies after 8pm (weekdays) or 5pm (weekends). The nurse provides the inpatient care as required and the vet is only on call for help or advice with an inpatient if needed. Each vet does 1 in 7 on call for any inpatient queries from the RVN caring for our inpatients. We have two different shifts 8am -5.30pm and 10am to 7.30pm and these are evenly split. Having a proper break during the day is important so we have protected lunch breaks where a vet is ready to tag in and take over from you.

Tony the practice owner and principal vet, has an open-door policy so we can go and chat to him about anything at any time. We have a big library where we can all get together for a chat about cases plus a large, comfortable break room. There is no hierarchy here, everyone is treated with respect and are colleagues are our friends.

Lynn started working for us as a weekend helped and then became a nursing assistant. She continued her training and is now our head nurse and practice co-ordinator.  Abbey Vets is a great place to work! The practice values members of the team and treats them well both financially and personally - you never feel like just a number here and can always rely on management support with whatever is needed. The same can be said about the wider team too, whether you want to learn new clinical skills or just swap a shift there is always someone willing to help with a smile on their face’.

Claire started as a receptionist at our main surgery and is now our reception and accounts manager. ‘I have worked at Abbey vets for 24years, from day 1 I was welcomed and felt part of one big family.  I started as receptionist and for the last 10years I have been reception & Accounts manager.  if I have ever had any issues personally or at work, I have always felt I could share these, and they would be sorted, and support given. All staff are treated with the utmost respect, there is no difference on how we are treated. Everyone is always friendly and welcoming of new members of staff and we all work as a team helping out different areas.  I could not imagine working anywhere else’.

The practices are really well located and South Yorkshire is a beautiful part of the country to live in. Barnsley is a lovely market town just off the M1. We are only 20 minutes from Leeds, Sheffield and Doncaster, and are close by to the lovely open spaces of the Peak District and the Yorkshire Moors. The rest of the world is also within our reach, with 6 international airports all within 90 minutes from us.

We are a really happy crew and genuinely love coming to work and regularly socialise outside of the practice. We also get involved with local charities and the group photo is us competing in ‘Its Knockout’ in aid of Barnsley Hospice. We also have big practice get together where our partners are invited too.
