Job Details

Shires Vets are looking to welcome a small animal Vet Surgeon to join our fantastic, supportive team. Your working weeks will offer a good variety of consulting, surgery, and investigative workups. Case continuity is important to us and our clients:

  • Full and part time applications considered
  • 4 days per week (10-hour days)
  • One late night (2-11pm) every 3 weeks (Stone practice)
  • Approximately 1 in 4 Saturdays (Lieu time given for all weekend work) but no Sundays

The late shift system maximises the chance of finishing on time your other shifts, supporting a great work: life balance. No two days are the same! Our varied caseload focusses on cats, dogs & rabbits but we will often see backyard poultry and exotic pets too.

About us

Shires Vets was established over 70 years ago and we are a mixed animal practice serving Staffordshire and the surrounding counties in the Midlands, with sites in Eccleshall, Gnosall, Stoke on Trent, Stone & Stafford.

Our small animal, farm & equine departments run separately from each other, with designated teams. We are proudly part of Linnaeus, committed to excellence in everything we do for our team, clients, and their pets.

We’ve a lovely team of vets, nurses, and support staff (just see below some of their reasons for working at Shires!). We’ve medicine, ophthalmology and imaging certificate holders, others working towards certificates and given the varied caseload and advanced level approach to primary care cases, this position would suit candidates wishing for support with working towards or having completed a certificate. We’ve those with particular interest in cardiology, orthopaedics & laprascopic procedures so can offer the support within our team for majority of cases alongside the wider Linnaeus community.

We’re seeking a colleague to join our fantastic team covering the Eccleshall, Gnosall and Stafford cluster of practices. These were recently refurbished with light spacious work environments and have ultrasound, digital xray, operating theatres, in house lab machines and separate dog/cat wards where we see a varied and interesting caseload. Our largest nearby site in Stone is a busy purpose-built practice well equipped with laparoscopy, flexible endoscopy, ultrasound, ophthalmic surgical microscope, dental x-ray, in-house lab and much more.

The Shires team members are all animal-owners and take pride in providing a caring, compassionate, and friendly service to all our clients and their precious pets. The team have high clinical standards, strong involvement in clinical governance activity and reflective learning, with an open ‘just’ culture and everyone striving for clinical excellence.

Your role and responsibilities

The ideal candidate for the role would be a surgeon who feels comfortable with all first opinion procedures, consulting, dental, imaging, and surgical procedures we are happy to support with more advanced procedures.

There is also ample opportunity to mentor and there may be the chance to take on some senior duties.

We all support each other and often discuss clinical cases. Our Vet teams are supported by experienced and dedicated RVN’s and a wonderful front of house team, all with customer care and Shires at their heart.

  • 25 days holiday + bank holidays + Birthday Leave
  • RCVS & VDS fees paid

Part of an amazing global family

The future of the veterinary world is at the heart of everything we do. We are all individual but two important things bring us together: a commitment to excellence and our passion to make A BETTER WORLD FOR PETS.

Linnaeus is owned by Mars, that makes us part of their 70,000 veterinary health Associates who spend their days thinking about the 400 million pets of the world and how to improve their lives.
