Glenn and I became firm friends whilst studying at the Dick Vet and decided to set up Apex Vets from the ground up in 2010. We did this because we wanted a really great place to work to take us through to retirement, and we wanted to be able to treat and diagnose patients to the absolute best of our ability. We started with 1 in 2 on call, one RVN (the “Head Nurse”!) and two receptionists. The practice has organically grown since, and we now have a team of 26, growing to 30 this year as we take on new ACAs to fill our new nightshift role.
We are determinedly independent practice, we focus on keeping our team happy, and we highly value everyone’s work life balance. We all enjoy our jobs and get home on time after a day’s work. We give vets ample time for workups between consults, capping our blocks of 15-minute appointments at 2 hours. We continue to invest in high spec equipment to push our diagnostic capabilities forward.
We enjoy whole practice (and usually partners) team building events and next month we are all going to Blair Drummond Safari park (together with 6 young kids who are coming with various team members) for a team building event. Last year we all went clay pigeon shooting and for a meal afterwards.
Each year since we opened, we have run a very successful community fun day and open day. We usually get 800-1000 people attending and always raise in excess of £1000 for charities handpicked by the team. The open day after party is renowned amongst the team and all the family and friends who help us on the day are welcomed for some food, the bar, and me being the DJ for the night.
We are looking for an additional vet to join us and we are happy to discuss a rota anywhere from 2-5 days per week including part days as long as clinicians are able to join our equally shared 1 in 6 on-call rota including weekends. The practice is in a Central Scotland location with Ochils nearby, yet with easy access to Edinburgh and Glasgow. We have extremely low staff turnover and this post is reflective of our current waiting list of clients and desire to expand our vet team.
Vets and nurses work a four-day week, work/life balance is a priority. Our Saturday mornings are included in the on-call rota so you will never work more that 1:6 Saturday’s (9-12am only). We have 6 weeks holiday plus an extra week either to be taken over Christmas or New Year.
We have a very supportive vet and nurse team who are always available for case discussions and backup, with weekly vet meetings for case discussions and are able to fully support new graduates.
We are proud to still provide an in house 24/7 emergency out of hours service for our clients, but calls are sensible at less than 1 per day and we offer vets a bonus of £60 for each out of hours consult that they see.
