Job Details

Colne Valley Vets are a well-respected independent small animal practice based in Colchester. We have a wide and varied caseload, with plenty of opportunity to increase both your surgical and medical experience with support from long-standing experienced colleagues.

We are a friendly and supportive team, providing a high standard of care in a relaxed but professional environment. We are well equipped with excellent surgical, dental, and diagnostic facilities (including dental x-ray and flexible and rigid scopes). We are also happy to invest in new equipment to support your interests. The practice is large, and purpose built with separate dog, cat, and exotic kennelling.  We also have a big team of experienced, qualified RVNs who provide high-level clinical support.

Due to relocation, we are looking for a Veterinary Surgeon to join us on a full-time basis. Ideally, we would like someone with experience, who is a gcockburn scope ood communicator, who can work as part of a team, but is also able to manage  his or her own cases, albeit with the support of experienced colleagues.

The role is a 4-day week with an additional Friday off every six weeks with only a 1:6 Saturday morning rota and no OOH’s. Whilst our days can be very busy and varied, we are very conscious to try and provide all the team with an excellent work-life balance.

Salary is £40-70k dependent on experience. We can also offer an excellent relocation package if needed.

 We have great benefits including:

  • Six weeks paid holiday plus bank holidays
  • Unlimited budget for CPD
  • Paid membership of all relevant professional bodies
  • Company bonus scheme
  • Discounted veterinary fees
  • Company sick pay
  • Relocation package if required

Colchester is a historic market town with lovely surrounding countryside, 25  minutes to the coast and just 45minutes by train into London.

The Colne Valley Veterinary Practice was founded in 1947 and was initially based in a small building behind a house in Military Road in Colchester. In those early days there were two vets and their practice treated both large and small animals. The Practice steadily grew until it occupied not just the buildings behind the house but the house itself.

In 1995, we ended our services for large animals and concentrated entirely on domestic pets. We are now classed as a 100% small animal veterinary practice and we are an accredited small animal general practice  in the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons practice standards scheme.

By 1998, we had outgrown our Military Road home and we moved our main premises to a new purpose built site on Maudlyn Road in Colchester. This is where we continue to be based today. Our building is large and well equipped with five consulting rooms and a large dispensary. We have excellent surgical facilities and we are very well equipped with diagnostic tools such as an x-ray machine, an ultrasound machine and several endoscopes (cameras that allow us to look into animals' lungs, stomachs and intestines.)

We also have a well-equipped practice laboratory. Our building has separate kennel rooms for cats, dogs and exotic pets. In short, we enjoy working in a large, comfortable and well equipped veterinary practice.

We have five full-time veterinary surgeons and four part-time veterinary surgeons working at the practice. In addition, we employ nine qualified Veterinary Nurses (six of whom are full-time.) We are a vet nurse training practice. We have a full time kennel maid. We have a practice accounts manageress, nine part-time receptionists and four cleaners.

Our practice is constantly evolving and adapting to take onboard new ideas and to take on new challenges. All our vets and nurses regularly attend courses and meetings to keep up to date with new techniques and ideas in the veterinary world.
