The Role
An exciting opportunity has become available for a Veterinary Surgeon to join us at McMurtry & Harding Veterinary Practice.

You will carry out a mix of consulting and surgery slots, either at our main Ashbourne Surgery or at our Wirksworth Branch, where sole charge would be required. You will be responsible for your caseload and with experience, help to mentor some of our Graduate Academy Vets.

We are flexible to consider both full and part-time applicants. The full-time role is based on 40 hours over 5 days per week, between 8:30 am – 5:30 pm (some late cover in the event of evening surgery where the last appointment would be 6:15 pm.) You will be required to work 1:7 weekends and weeknights on a rotational basis.

Salary for this role is up to £54,000 DOE + Benefits

About Us
Ashbourne is a modern, high quality, first opinion practice, with purpose-built facilities, shared with our farm animal team. We are a busy central hub, offering hospitalisation and overnight care for cases from our branch surgeries. Our clients are an engaged and proactive group and uptake on our recommendations for investigations and workups are well received.

We have four consulting rooms and a large light reception with separate cat and dog waiting areas. The prep area is massive, with lots of natural light and leads to two theatres and an x-ray/ultrasound room; rigid and flexible endoscopy /laparoscopic facilities are also available. A well kitted out lab complements the other diagnostic facilities.

Our central location gives access to the beauty of the Peak District National Park, but within 2 hours you have many large cities so meeting up with friends and family is easy, but let's face it if you are living in the Peak District they'll want to visit you!

About the Team and Culture
We have 8 small animal vets, a further 6 farm vets and our sister practice of Overdale has another 8 vets. We are lucky to have a wide range of experience varying from medicine/feline medicine certificate holders and an endoscopy and endosurgery certificate holder. This gives a massive breadth and depth of skills to investigate and operate on cases in-house.

We are a nurse training practice and have 11 nurses, several of which hold certificates in emergency and critical care. As we do our own on-call you will have the opportunity to develop your skills alongside the team. Learning is always encouraged, and we promote our vets having a niche, whether that be in a discipline of medicine or surgery.

To be a vet with us you must be a great communicator and team player, in return, you will have clinical freedom and support where needed.

Our staff and clients together is what makes us such a great practice, we have a relationship built on generations of trust, giving us immense job satisfaction

Outside of work we have an active bunch of runners, climbers and bikers. The Peak District is a great playground to get out, about and explore

Applicant Requirements
We are looking for a confident and experienced vet capable of sole charge when needed, or a vet looking to take the next step beyond the graduate programme. Good communication skills are a key asset for any candidate to be successful, as is the ability to work well with a team. Someone who has an interest in mentoring younger graduates would be desirable.
