Job Details

We are growing and are looking for an additional vet to join our independent, 11 vet small animal Tier-3 hospital in beautiful Somerset. If you would like to join a practice where we value our team, where everyone is willing to work together and get stuck in, but also enjoy their time away, then read on!

There is a lot of laughter in our practice, and we have created a professional, but really friendly and supportive work environment. We have a shared office where we discuss cases, and we will always help each other out. We have a workplace fun -budget which colleagues can use towards meals out, theatre tickets or days out to local attractions. We also have a monthly ‘Feast on   Mount vets party Friday’ cooked by one of our talented receptionists and is a fantastic way for the team from every department to get together. The practice regularly supports local and national charities, and we like to get involved in local events.

We are lucky to have large modern purpose-built premises that we moved into in 2018. Our small animal department is a busy, first opinion practice that offers referrals in surgery (including orthopaedics) and ophthalmology. We have a strong team of certificate holders including surgery, medicine, ophthalmology, exotics and one in progress in dermatology. Several of our team of 22 RVNs have also obtained certificates in emergency and critical care as well as anaesthesia.

We have all the usual kit plus, not only dental x-ray, but a separate dental theatre, a great ultrasound with doppler plus a linear and cardiac probe. We also have rhino-, broncho- and gastroscopes, digital X-ray and an array of slit lamps and tonometry. We are alExterior so fortunate that we are less than 2 miles from Cave referrals so access to CT very close by.

We work a 4-day week, with the same day off each week.  We consult from 9 am until 5.45pm with adequate time during the day for telephone calls and messages. Consultations are 15 minutes long with double appointments for more complicated cases and euthanasia’s. Each consulting block is either 3 appointment or 4 appointments in length and then there is a 15 minute or 30-minute break. This enables time to catch up if running late or deal with any messages or in patients.  We have two vets operating for the whole day and a third vet who operates for the morning and then consults in the afternoon. Each vet has at least one operating day per week with the option of an additional half day operating as the third operating vet.

As our consults finish by 6pm, this allows you to, more often than not, leave on time and explore Wellington and the surrounding area; we are stone’s throw from the Quantocks and both the Blackdown & Brendon Hills and just 40 minutes from the South Devon beaches. We are also very well connected; 5 minutes from junction 26 on the M5 so Bristol, Exeter and Taunton are all within easy reach and we’re even only 90 minutes by train to Central London.

We do our own out of hours and have recently changed the rota so that there are 5 weeks out of the 7 where you do a 4-day week, no Saturdays, no weekends, or any on -call night shifts.  We’ve done this by creating blocks; Week 1 you do a Saturday morning consult and are on call for the daytime only for the rest of Saturday and Sunday. Following this you then have the Monday off in addition to the Friday off, (so a 3-day week) Week 2; you only do nights (no days) and a short consulting shift on Saturday morning; you  Mount Vets Prep Room  then have 5 weeks with no weekends or nights. It’s not as complicated as it sounds, and it works well for the team by creating large chunks with no weekends or duties! We also have night nurses in the hospital, so that the on-call vet can be at home and only comes in if required.

Ideally, we are looking for a vet with some experience, someone who is looking to start a certificate in their area of interest. However, we are able to support new graduates with our mentoring programme and are a University of Surrey affiliated practice and regularly have final year veterinary students on rotation with us. We currently have two new graduates who have been with us since August 2021. This enables new graduates joining Mount Vets to have regular check ins with their dedicated mentor and an assigned clinician to run through cases during consultations or surgery.

The package on offer includes a

  • Salary of £30,000 for a new grad up to £70,000 for an experienced colleague.
  • 5 weeks holiday plus bank holidays, increasing with length of service.
  • VDS and RCVS fees
  • £1500 CPD budget, certificates encouraged.
  • AXA Private health insurance & employee assistance scheme.
  • Workplace fun budget

If you would like to discuss the role further, please do not hesitate to pick up the phone for an informal pre -application chat or if you’d like to apply, please apply to CV@vettimes.co.uk or press the apply button now.
