Thameswood practice

We are a family-run small animal independent practice based In Swindon. We have a great reputation clinically, but also for looking after and developing everyone who works with us.  We are always looking to improve things both for our clinical and support teams and for our clients. We have worked in this wonderful profession for 35 years and have done so by supporting our team as members of our family offering flexibility, sabbaticals, 4-day weeks and support to gain further certificates or other CPD.

"I worked for Thameswood Veterinary clinics for over five years and was nurtured from new grad to surgical certificate holder in that time with fantastic support throughout. Thameswood is a traditional busy independent practice that still has that lovely team vibe which made working together easy and professional. I would still be there if my location hadn't changed! "

Nicola MRCVS

"Thameswood Vets is a unique independent practice that will offer you the best balance between life and work. Nick, the principal vet, is a very knowledgeable and experienced clinician and a chilled and polite person, always happy to help and assist but never oppressive. Giovanna is an enthusiastic manager that will put you always first; she is very flexible and efficient and has a great attention for her staff welfare."

Riccardo MRCVS

One of our practices biggest strengths is Nick, the owner, who is an experienced vet who enjoys both surgery and medicine and enjoys passing his skills on to younger vets. One of our new graduates was able to achieve her surgical certificate within her first 3 years with us and many of our vets leave us to take up positions in referral settings. We are able to tackle most surgical cases successfully, generally only referring spinal cases or hip replacements.

We have all the usual kit that makes life easy but also the extras that make practice fun and challenging. So, think of all the usual stuff (digital Xray, ultrasound, in house lab machine) plus endoscopy- 2 stacks for flexible and rigid plus laparoscopy, Oscillometric and Doppler B.P., capnographs, continual temp. monitoring, critical care bloods, tonometry, Cryopen, ecg, laser therapy, regenerative medicine including PRP and stem cell.  If you think of anything else you need to develop your career, we will get VNs and GPs it! We also have access to CT and MRI on an outpatient basis so you can continue those interesting cases without full referral but there is also easy access to an exotic specialist practice in Swindon and a full referral hospital should you need it.

We practice `no fear` principles and run fear- free programmes and youth clubs so our patients enjoy their visits to us, making life easier for everyone. We absolutely aim to be the best first opinion practice in the area and try to do things a little differently. We have 3 clinics, a tranquillity garden and separate garden room for end-of-life care and offer bereavement counselling. We are opening a new separate cat clinic to Gold ISFM standards early in 2022.  We also have our own on -site animal physiotherapist. Our in-house patients stay in separate luxury cattery and dog kennels, and we are hoping to build a rabbit ward soon. All our OOHs emergencies are covered by Vets Now.

Any new graduates will be fully supported by shadowing a senior vet for up to three months whilst they gain the confidence to carry their career forward. For experienced vets. if there is a particular aspect of practice you would like to develop, we are happy to support that interest.

We have a great nursing team of 16, with a high nurse to vet ratio. Therandom acts of Kindness [square] nursing team includes many long-standing senior nurses who can support both graduates and experienced vets alike. There is a separate excellent client care and management team to make life easier for everyone.

We would love someone to join us who shares our enthusiasm and passion for both their profession, and animal welfare, and be able to provide a service to clients in a caring and capable manner. Any additional specialist skills will be greatly appreciated and reflected in starting salary.

Details of the full-time position:

  • 4-day week hours 9am until 6.30pm,
  • 1:4 Saturday mornings plus weekend inpatient care only, assisted by both an RVN and VCA.
  • We encourage CPD and can help with financial support if candidates are hoping to take certificates
  • Emergencies covered by Vets Now
  • Salary £35,000 to £65,000 plus pension and private health care provision.
  • Applicants must be from EAEVA approved, or accredited veterinary schools and we can help with MRCVS (Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons’ membership) plus job sponsorship.
