Job Details

Mixed Veterinary Surgeon required at Heartland Vets, Pitlochry, Perthshire.

The Role
Here at Heartland we have an exciting opportunity for two enthusiastic and capable Veterinary Surgeons to join our wonderful team. The normal working day varies greatly depending on the workload and the time of the year. All our vets work with all species, on the farm side that involves mainly beef cattle and sheep although there is some pig work and occasionally deer work. There is also a steady stream of equine work. So, on some days you might spend all day in the clinic with domestic pets and other days all day on farm and equine calls and very often a mixture of the two. Our consulting times are roughly between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday. We work a 1 in 5 on call rota so you would work one night in 5 Monday to Thursday and then 1 weekend in 5 Friday night, Saturday and Sunday. The rota is currently arranged so that the vet who works at the weekend gets the following Friday off work. New graduates and less experienced vets are supported by a colleague as necessary when on call.

•    Salary dependent on experience circa £30000-£45000
•    5 days a week
•    1 in 5 on call (Monday-Thursday)
•    1 in 5 weekend nights (Friday-Sunday), with following Friday off work

About Us
Heartland Vets is a two centered mixed practice in Highland Perthshire. We are surrounded by beautiful scenery with lochs and mountains. Our mission is to provide a high-quality cost-effective veterinary service to the towns and rural communities that we are proud to be a part of. We do our own out of hours work which ensures good continuity of treatment for clients and their animals. Our Pitlochry surgery was converted in 2013 and has a modern layout. The facilities there include CR x-ray, dental x-ray, ultrasound, therapeutic laser, rigid endoscopy, doppler blood pressure monitor, anaesthetic monitor and an electrosurgery machine. If necessary, equipment is shared with the Aberfeldy surgery. The location is in a quiet residential area which is easily accessible and has a car park. The Mill Surgery in Aberfeldy is a smaller building of an older style. The team here has a DR x-ray machine and an older ultrasound scanner. Both surgeries have a range of in-house lab equipment including haematology and biochemistry analysers. For large animal work we have further ultrasound scanners, bull and tup semen testing equipment and equine dental tools. The DR x-ray system is also useful for x-raying off site.

At the moment we have 7 vets in the team. Due to coronavirus restrictions we are split into two teams between the two surgeries. In normal times this split would not be so rigid. We have 2 vet nurses - one based at each surgery. We do not have any certificate holders or specialists in the practice although would welcome anyone who has a special interest and would support them. The practice supports a number of local shows and our younger vets often become involved with the local young farmers club which holds a lot of social events.

Applicant requirements
We are replacing a vet with 4 years experience and a very capable 2019 graduate. Ideally, we would like to employ vets with some similar mixed practice experience with the confidence to work independently. Any special skills or interests for example in medicine or surgery would be welcomed. The candidate would be expected to take part in the rota which involves farm and equine work.
