Residency in Small Animal Surgery

Highcroft Veterinary Referrals/Bristol Veterinary Specialists

We are excited to offer this three-year clinical training post at Highcroft Veterinary Referrals/Bristol Veterinary Specialists in Bristol.  You will be supervised and supported by our surgical diplomats to prepare you for the ECVS diploma examinations after completion of the programme.

Highcroft Veterinary Referrals is a specialist led, referral only hospital. We offer a broad range of Specialist veterinary referral services including internal medicine, oncology, soft tissue surgery, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopaedics, anaesthesia, diagnostic imaging, dermatology and ophthalmology. We will be relocating to our brand new state-of-the-art purpose built hospital in summer 2022, then becoming Bristol Veterinary Specialists. The hospital will be fully equipped and will be the only hospital in the South West to have a linear accelerator.

This 3-year residency program includes 70-75% time on-clinics having primary responsibility on clinical cases, the remainder being divided between externships, research and paper writing. Participation to the emergency service will be done on a shared rota basis (no more than 1-in 4 week nights and 1-in-4 weekends on call, averaging over twelve months). The resident will also be expected to present research work at Scientific Congresses and be involved in CPD events for first opinion vets. Particular attention will be paid on meeting credentials criteria to sit the ECVS certifying examination at the end of the residency program.

We are looking for a candidate with a proactive, professional approach and a positive attitude at all times, together with outstanding interpersonal skills, an ability to stay calm under pressure, great team work skills, and a commitment to practising the highest standards of veterinary medicine and patient care is required.

If you think you have these skills and wish to apply for the residency programme you must be a qualified Veterinary Surgeon and be eligible for full Membership of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS).

A minimum of twelve months experience working as a qualified Veterinary Surgeon in small animal private practice in the UK is essential. We expect that candidates will have completed a minimum of a one year rotating internship.

Highcroft Veterinary Referrals is a multidisciplinary Referral Centre in Bristol (South West of England), with a great team spirit and a wide range of referral services. The city is well connected to Cardiff, Exeter, Birmingham and London by road and rail and Bristol International Airport is within 15 minute drive giving easy access to continental Europe and beyond. Beautiful countryside in Somerset, Wales and Cornwall is a short distance away.
