Do you consider yourself a strong advocate for animal welfare? If so, a career with the RSPCA may be just what you are looking for!

The RSPCA is the largest animal welfare charity in England and Wales. Our purpose as the RSPCA is to prevent cruelty, promote kindness and alleviate the suffering of all animals.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Veterinary Nurse to join the Clinic in Merthyr Tydfil. You’ll be joining our veterinary team helping with nursing, anaesthetics and reception duties.

This role is fundamental to allow us to continue to provide veterinary care for animals brought in by the inspectorate and owned animals. Our clinic offers low cost veterinary service to those eligible in the catchment area as well as providing emergency veterinary assistance at an unsubsidised rate.

We are looking for someone who is confident, works well under pressure and is self-motivated to work independently without constant supervision.

Our rota system is life balance friendly,  with the first shift of the day being 8.00-16.00 and the latest being 10.00-18.00 with a bank holiday weekend and one in four weekends with two days off in lieu the following week.

At the RSPCA we’ve been at the forefront of animal welfare since 1824 where we were founded in a London coffee shop and we’re proud to be the oldest welfare charity around. With our new strategy ‘Together for Animal Welfare’ we want to improve the lives of more animals in England, Wales, and internationally than ever before and without our dedicated staff and volunteers, we wouldn’t be able to achieve all that we do for animals.

What you’ll be doing:

  • The role is focused on direct medical and surgical patient care, utilising your nursing capabilities in both medical and surgical roles
  • Triage patients for the attention of the veterinary surgeon
  • Maintain up to date and accurate clinical records
  • Dispense drugs in accordance with professional guidelines clinic rules
  • Cleaning and maintenance of all surgical areas, wards, theatres and x ray rooms
  • Cleaning and basic maintenance of veterinary equipment and machinery (eg radiography, endoscopy and dental) and sterilisation of surgical instruments
  • Check machinery and other equipment as part of pre-ops and provide assistance to the vet as necessary during operations
  • Ensure that all clients of the clinic receive accurate itemised bills at the time of treatment and keep full records of these
  • Undertake continuing professional and personal development associated with the role

You’ll have:

  • Either a Level 3 Diploma in Veterinary Nursing or a Degree in Veterinary Nursing
  • Registration with the RCVS
  • Good communication skills
  • A professional approach to veterinary nursing and clinical care
  • Self motivation and be able to manage your own time
  • The ability to demonstrate teamwork with veterinary animal centre and Inspectorate colleagues

What’s in it for you:

You’ll have an opportunity to work for the largest animal welfare charity in England and Wales.

We value and recognise our employees’ contribution and are proud to offer an extensive benefits package that includes:

35 hours standard working week, 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays increasing to 30 days with service; a generous pension scheme with associated life assurance and group income protection scheme; access to private healthcare scheme; support for professional development after qualifying period and access to our employee assistance programme. We also offer free parking on site.

To apply, please submit your CV and short covering letter quoting reference VN0813 by the closing date 10:00 Friday 17th December 2021.

Company

Speak up

Through our campaigns we raise standards of care and awareness of issues for the animals who have no voice.

With your support we push for laws to be changed, improving the welfare of animals on farms, in research labs, in the wild, in paddocks or in our homes.

Stand up Through investigations and prosecutions we stand up to those who deliberately harm animals to send out a clear message - we will not tolerate animal abuse.

Our highly trained officers tackle neglect and cruelty at every level and are working hard to stamp out large-scale serious, organised and commercial animal cruelty.

Be counted

We believe every animal has the right to be counted as an individual.

Animals can rely on us to rescue them when they need us most. To rehabilitate them wherever possible, provide them with the very best veterinary care and to find them new homes, either through rehoming or release.
