We are mixed family run practice in pleasant rural environment north of Bristol. We are looking for either a purely small animal vet or alternatively a mixed practice vet who is happy to help with some of the large/equine side of the business. Good prospects for further involvement if interested.
Who are we?
We are an independent mixed animal practice established over 60 years ago. We are on a good functional 3-acre site in pleasant South Gloucestershire countryside at Milbury Heath, just off the M5, only 25 minutes from Bristol. We are a 4-vet practice run by husband-and-wife team Ken and Amie Gradwell, who live in a farmhouse on site to help clients 24/7. Ken is the main vet, and currently does all the large animal and equine visits. He is helped by 3 other part-time and full-time small animal vets. We train our own RVNs and are very lucky to have such a fantastic and experienced nursing team. Our two lead nurses share the head nurse role and are helped by another RVN, and two SVNS who will qualify in 2022. We also have four good administrators and receptionists. We are a small and close -knit team, who really look after one another.
The case mix currently is around 60% small animal, 30% farm and 10% equine. Many of our clients have small holdings and we treat a huge variety of species including alpacas, llamas and kune kune pigs. There is no routine TB testing, but regular pre movement testing.
We regularly invest in new equipment to keep our facilities up to date. We’re happy to support our vets in their interests. We also have planning permission for a large two-story extension to the practice, so there is plenty of scope to expand!
All our vets have an hour’s lunch break, and we work together as a team to make the day work as smoothly as possible. There is dedicated time to do your admin and lab reports, you will not be micromanaged and there are no targets. You work closely with the reception team to manage your diary, and we have dedicated emergency slots at the end of the day.
About the role
We are very flexible. We’d love to chat to you if you just want to do small animals or if you would like to get involved in the large animal side too. Ideally, we’d love you to work 4 days a week and 1:4 Saturday mornings (just 9-12pm) but there is some flexibility in that. At the moment Ken does all the on calls, and you could have a role with no on calls. If you are mixed vet, you may want to get involved in the OOH rota. The is no sole charge as there is always another vet on site. There are different rotas available; 10am-7pm and 9am- 6pm, but it’s all up for discussion. We share the consulting equally and you will also have dedicated ops days.
We’d like someone with some experience, who is able to do the basics, but we are happy to help with your development. We may also be able to provide Visa sponsorship for the right candidate.
Salary is £40,000-£56,000 depending on experience, and we pay RCVS and VDS fees. We are also happy to support certificates. If a mixed vet also took on some of the OOH duties, we would also pay a monthly housing allowance of £550.
This is a really unique practice and a role full of future opportunities, please don’t hesitate to pick up the phone and have a chat!
