Job title:  Veterinary Surgeon (casual)

Location:  Birmingham Animal Centre

Hourly rate:   Circa £23.12 per hour (DOE)

Hours:  Casual - variable

Closing date: 10:00 Saturday 20th November 2021

Are you looking to work on the frontline of an organisation that ends cruelty, promotes kindness to and alleviates suffering of animals?

We’re looking for an experienced Veterinary Surgeon to join us at our flagship charity Hospital and Animal Centre on a casual basis.  You will be filling in gaps in the routine hospital roster whilst our full time vets are redeployed to support the Inspectorate with case work, attend court, deal with large unpredictable influxes of animals that require veterinary care.

Birmingham Animal Hospital is based in a lovely rural setting, has excellent motorway access and is 20 minutes drive from central Birmingham. It consists of a friendly and enthusiastic team of 6.5 vets, 20 RVNs and 9 support staff.

We have an excellent range of equipment including:

  • Ultrasound/cardiology probe/colour doppler
  • Endoscope/bronchoscope
  • Tonopen
  • ECG
  • Inhouse lab
  • Multiparameter anaesthetic monitoring
  • Independent pulse Ox CO2 monitors, DCP/ SOP plating systems

This is a shelter medicine/ surgery based role and comprises nearly 100% small animal companion work (with a small amount of wildlife). We are looking for a vet that is confident in routine small animal surgery and has a strong interest in welfare work.

This is a flexible working relationship as we are unable to guarantee set hours or days however generally the working day would be from 8am to 3.30pm for day shifts or 2pm to 9pm for a late oncall shift, with a standby allowance from 9pm. Being able to assist with weekends where gaps develop would be beneficial but not essential.

What you’ll be doing as an RSPCA Vet:

Clinically the work focuses on surgery, diagnostics (radiography and both cardiac and abdominal ultrasonography), emergency trauma, shelter medicine, preventative medicine and infection control and working alongside the inspectorate on welfare cases.

  • Rescue and rehabilitation of injured/ ill strays and victims of cruelty
  • Shelter medicine/ surgery for the onsite animal rehoming centre
  • Welfare support work for the RSPCA Inspectorate
  • Surgical referrals for surrounding RSPCA animal centres and branches
  • Wildlife triage
  • Liaising with and supporting local RSPCA animal centres and branches via telephone consultations and email communications by answering queries relating to veterinary/welfare/rehomeability decisions
  • A subsidised veterinary service for the public on low-incomes

The main bulk of work consists of 90% RSPCA generated animal work and 10% general public work.  Public clients are on means tested benefits and generally very appreciative of the service we provide.

The nature of our work involves pragmatic decision making with the ability to prognosticate and take a logical and cost effective approach to clinical conditions, where the animals welfare is always being prioritised.

The package consists of

  • Generous pension scheme with associated life assurance and group income protection scheme
  • Private healthcare scheme
  • The opportunity to work for the largest animal welfare charity in England and Wales

Company

Speak up

Through our campaigns we raise standards of care and awareness of issues for the animals who have no voice.

With your support we push for laws to be changed, improving the welfare of animals on farms, in research labs, in the wild, in paddocks or in our homes.

Stand up Through investigations and prosecutions we stand up to those who deliberately harm animals to send out a clear message - we will not tolerate animal abuse.

Our highly trained officers tackle neglect and cruelty at every level and are working hard to stamp out large-scale serious, organised and commercial animal cruelty.

Be counted

We believe every animal has the right to be counted as an individual.

Animals can rely on us to rescue them when they need us most. To rehabilitate them wherever possible, provide them with the very best veterinary care and to find them new homes, either through rehoming or release.
