Veterinary Surgeon required at Strathspey Veterinary Centre, Grantown on Spey, Highland

The Role

We are currently looking for an enthusiastic and adaptable veterinary surgeon to join our friendly team here at Strathspey Vets. We would require you to work with all species; our large animal work is majority beef cattle and sheep, and you will have regular consulting and operating sessions working with our small animal patients. The majority of our equine work is first opinion. As a member of our full-time veterinary team, you will be required to work a 1 in 4 on call rota – this includes one night a week and every fourth weekend. Generous time off is given following on-call shifts and you will always have a 4-day week plus time off in lieu following a weekend on call. There are always two vets on call which provides good support.

About Us

We are a truly mixed practice with a rough ratio of 60:40 small to large animal work and the occasional equine call. Located in the Cairngorm National Park, there is ample opportunity to enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Many of our staff pursue a wide range of outdoor activities including hiking, skiing, kayaking, and biking.

We work across two modern practices and our small animal facilities are supported by an amazing team of RVNs, SVNs and VCAs. We have a wide range of experience within our clinical team, and everyone is confident in supporting each other.

Experience is preferred but we are open to taking on the right candidate that will fit with our team and can work in a dynamic workplace.

Company

Based in Grantown-on-Spey in the beautiful Cairngorms National Park, with branches in Aviemore and Kingussie, we offer comprehensive and high quality veterinary services. We have a wide range of expertise within the practice and deal with all species, offering veterinary services to pet owners, farms, sporting estates and zoo and wildlife collections. We even look after some reindeer!

We aim to work in partnership with our clients to ensure the optimal health and wellbeing of their animals. We are always here for you if things go wrong, both by offering appointments at short notice (usually within 24 hours) and through provision of our in-house 24 hour emergency service. We are also passionate about preventative healthcare and believe that by promoting this we can bring genuine benefits to animals. We hope to build a close and friendly relationship with you and your pets so that we are your first port of call for individual, reliable and up-to-date advice. To this end we are happy to offer telephone advice to our registered clients – often a quick chat with one of the vets or our qualified nurse will give you the reassurance you need.

The practice was established in 1954 by George Rafferty, who dealt predominantly with farm animals but also held evening consultations from his home along the road on Seafield Avenue. His son Andrew took over the running of the practice in 1991 and, following the recruitment of Jane Harley, he gradually oversaw the development of a busy small animal service. Today the practice operates from three permanent surgeries in Grantown, Aviemore and Kingussie and sees cases from throughout Strathspey and Badenoch as well as much further afield.
