About the role
The role will vary from day to day as core duties are shared on a rota. If a nurse is on surgical duties they will liaise with the surgical vet that day in conducting care of admissions and surgical cases. They will both liaise and share responsibility for communicating progress with clients and arranging discharge of inpatients. Other days will be spent performing nurse consultations, assisting other clinical staff, possibly assisting trainee nurses and performing some administrative duties. The core hours for the role are 35 per week over 4.5 days. Any weekend or on-call work is compensated via an additional payment

About the practice
We are a relatively small practice and strive to provide a very personal service to a loyal client base. Being small, we know our clients and patients well. Our clients enjoy the familiarity of a small clinical team. We serve North Carlisle and surrounding villages. The area is rural and beautiful with easy access to the Lake District and Scottish Borders.

We have 8 vets and 5 nurses between two practices. The work at Border Vets is predominantly commercial farm work but with an increasing small animal case load. 5 Vets and Nurses provide emergency OOHs on-call cover to our own clients. We strive to provide a top quality service to our clients. We value our nursing staff highly and aim to provide a supportive, respectful and enjoyable working environment for our colleagues.

Applicant requirements
We require a Registered Veterinary Nurse with excellent communication skills and a cheerful disposition. Willingness to participate in the residential on-call rota is essential. Willingness to coach a trainee veterinary nurse would be advantageous.

Company

Eden Vets was born in the wake of the Foot and Mouth outbreak in 2001. Our owner, Charlie Foster, runs the large animal practice at Border Vets in Longtown but knew that sadly it would take time for many farmers to build up their livestock again.   So Charlie used the time to establish our small animal vets, finding our premises on Kingstown Road and converting them into the homely and welcoming practice we use today.   Both practices are now thriving businesses.  (And we are pleased to say the Cumbrian farmers proved their grit and resilience). For more information about our current Farm and Equine work, please click here.

Our building on Kingstown Road used to be a family home with a smallholding – many of our clients remember visiting as children and getting to know the goats, guinea pigs and other small animals that lived here. We’re delighted the property is still a sanctuary for animals and we like to think the previous residents would have approved.

Our red-brick building still looks like the family home it used to be, removing some of the fear your pets may experience about going into a medical environment. We want them to feel like they’re visiting friends. Our reception area, with individual seating and access to refreshments, leads on to two treatment rooms where we take the time to get to know you and your pet and work out the best possible treatment plan.

Everyone at Eden Vets is passionate about animals and the practice has strong connections with a large number of animal charities. As well as supporting the work of the RSPCA, Cats’ Protection League and Blue Cross we’re particularly pleased to offer our expertise to a couple of local charities who do great work in our community: The Penny Jones Animal Hospice in Hethersgill and The Animals Refuge at Wetheral Shields.

We’re an approved veterinary nurse training practice, helping ensure there are more talented nurses being created in our area.  We’re particularly proud of the nurses who gain their qualifications while working for us and then go on to become fully-fledged members of the Eden Vets team.
