I have enjoyed every day spent working at Alma Veterinary Surgery and I will be extremely sad to leave. I am so grateful for the opportunity the practice gave me and I can't thank them enough for all their hard work, patience and support.

At Alma Vets you can develop your skills, you can come up with new ideas and feel supported, and everyone works as a team. Heather Westron (the practice owner) is so supportive and approachable, and the team of nurses and receptionists are so knowledgeable and dedicated; but above all you will gain a little family for life!

I have been suspicious of employees' testimonials before, so if you are thinking "if it is that good, why is she leaving?" Trust me, it was no easy decision, but I must move closer to home (because home is where your heart is, right?).

To anyone looking for a great job, please have a look at this role or call to find out more about the place or team. If you're on the fence, then just do what I did almost 3 years ago and TAKE THE JOB! I can promise that you won't regret it!!

Beatriz Miranda MRCVS MSc

Small Animal Vet in the North Yorkshire Coast
“Our ethos is that all the staff in our practice should have the support they need to achieve a happy work-life balance”

OUR PRACTICE:
Alma Veterinary Surgery is a long established and proudly independent practice in Scarborough.  Many of our staff have been with us for decades or have known us since they were students.  Heather, our director has worked at Alma since 2000 and took full ownership in 2020.  Since then, we have been modernising equipment and improving our services, as well as working to improve staff quality of life.

We have a good reputation locally for high standards of pet care with a “down to earth” approach.  We need to expand our little family which is currently comprised of 3 full-time and 2 part-time vets, supported by a fantastic team including a practice manager, a qualified VN, 3 nursing assistants and a receptionist.  We are RCVS accredited and have a close association with local animal charities, including the RSPCA who have a cattery based at our surgery. We do our own OOH, made easier by our night vet who covers 5 nights every 2 weeks. We operate a flexible rota which is evenly shared.

Alma pic 1When you are not at work, an excellent quality of life is guaranteed by the affordable housing and local attractions including beautiful sandy beaches, tiny fishing villages, Dalby Forest, North Yorkshire Moors and Wolds, the historic city of York and seaside town of Whitby. In Scarborough, there are great places to eat out, popular acts in the Open-Air Theatre and the Stephen Joseph Theatre is just round the corner.  Our staff enjoy many hobbies and pursuits including cycling, running, horse riding, walking, rugby, water sports, baking and music.

OUR ROLE:
Our new vet will perform first opinion consultations, diagnostics and surgery in small animals. They will share the OOH rota (1-in-4 weekends, with the remaining weekdays shared out 1-in-6).

We offer a wide variety of veterinary services and encourage discussion and clinical freedom, so our vets can pursue interests and help each other with complex cases.

The regular working week is 4 days, but you will also regularly get extra days which allow long (4 day) weekends off (usually every third week). The existing staff love these mini breaks.

Alma 20 yearsOUR IDEAL CANDIDATE
We would like someone who demonstrates they are both caring and enthusiastic to fit into our team. Experience is an advantage; however we are willing to support and encourage a graduate, or someone returning from a career break while they find their confidence. It is more important to us that our vets work cases up properly and offer excellent service, rather than focus on sales targets or be rushed. Whilst this role is for a general practitioner, we would love to support someone wanting to achieve a certificate/specialism. We are looking for a vet who has ideas and wants to contribute to our growth as we are always open to ideas to expand the services we offer.

THE PACKAGE:

•    Salary £36k - £50k (full time), dependent on experience, specialist skills or qualifications
•    Generous CPD and VDS cover,
•    RCVS, BSAVA, BVA fees paid
•    Generous staff discount.
•    5 weeks holiday and any bank holidays worked will earn lieu days off.
•    Assistance with accommodation if required.
•    Future potential for a directorship.
