St Helena Island, South Atlantic

3 years FTC available immediately

Enjoying unique lifestyle opportunities, St Helena Island is a self-governing overseas territory of the United Kingdom. Although better placed to develop economically and socially as a result of opening our international airport in 2017, we are not at the stage of self-sufficiency and therefore remain dependent on UK government aid.

Leading four veterinary staff you will play a vital role supporting agricultural production and domestic animal care on the island, plus regulatory aspects of animal imports and exports and biosecurity. You will be principal adviser to the St Helena and Ascension Governments, private and public sectors on animal health, disease and welfare. Responsibilities will include surveillance and monitoring of the disease status of the Island’s animals.

You will implement and monitor the Environment, Natural Resources and Planning (ENRP) Portfolio’s Animal and Apiculture Import and Export Health Standards (protocols). This includes boarding ships and yachts, attending the airport and overseeing quarantine facilities. As a member of the Island’s Health Protection Board you will represent ENRP as the EU Competent Authority for veterinary and livestock matters, the implementation of International Health Regulations and any other issues relating to public health.

A professionally qualified veterinary surgeon, you must have substantial post-graduate experience in medicine and surgery. Clinical acumen will be key, with experience of clinical work on farm and domestic animals. You should have knowledge of livestock production systems plus experience of Artificial Insemination application procedures for livestock, or undertake AI training before coming to St Helena. Understanding agricultural and animal legislation and with an ability to mentor and delegate, you will possess strong negotiation and diplomacy skills, communicating effectively with laymen, para-professionals, pet owners, Government officials, politicians and the media.

In addition, you must demonstrate St Helena Government’s core values of fairness, integrity and teamwork and use your diverse expertise and experiences to ensure your time on the Island has the broadest benefit to St Helena.  As an officer funded through the Technical Co-Operation Programme you will be expected to share your knowledge and skills beyond the workplace contributing to workforce, community and capacity development in St Helena.
