Job Details

Welcome to an overview of a day in the life of a large animal vet at Tern Vets. A normal day would include fertility visits, generally in the morning, but sometimes later in the day. Farm visits for herd health planning etc. and of course the daily calls to sick or injured animals, calving’s, lambing’s etc.

We have 2 full time TB testers but vets do take on some testing or pre movement tests within the course of their day. We are a first opinion horse practice and some of our large animal vets enjoy the variety of a horse call. Our office staff are very experienced, knowledgeable and supportive, with a great ability to organise the daily diary in the most effective manner, whilst keeping the biscuit tin well stocked!

We work from a site in the rural town of Market Drayton, there has been a vet on this site for over 100 years and we still have a collection of some of the old equipment and medicines that were used “in the old days”, one of our retired partners whips them out for a gory display on open days! We are based on the Shropshire/Cheshire/Staffordshire border with easy access to the M6 and approximately 1 hour from Manchester and Birmingham.

As a practice we are utilizing all of the usual software and equipment (Interherd, Total Vet, Easiscan, EEJ) we have a full in-house lab (culture, microscopy, biochemistry) and aim to provide a bespoke, professional service to our progressive, friendly farm clients. Combined with our small animal practice we are a friendly, supportive and sociable team who enjoy each other’s company in and out of work.

We are a five vet farm team looking to increase to 6 in September with the addition of a new graduate vet, these vets are supported by 3 admin/reception assistants. The vet team is led by CD John Steel (a dairy farms son), John has a wealth of experience and is supported by other committed and experienced farm vets.

Tern Vets also has a small animal practice based over 2 sites and a first opinion horse practice. Tern vets employs 38 people across the 3 disciplines with various degrees of experience and training, we are always happy to support any relevant CPD.

Having been established for over 100 years the practice has a long and deep connection with the area, we enjoy interacting on all levels with our clients and our stand is a regular and popular attraction at our local agricultural show.

We are looking a farm vet to complete our supportive and progressive team. Although we are looking for a full-time vet, consideration would be given to flexibility to allow the right candidate the opportunity to achieve a work life balance that allows them to excel at work whilst enjoying family life. Experience is preferred, but we do have an encouraging team who are happy to support development, our primary concern is finding the right applicant.

We are a practice who pride ourselves on the building of relationships with the local community, providing an outstanding clinical service within a friendly and supportive working environment.

The right candidate will be someone who is passionate about farm practice and its progression, enjoys working as part of a team but is also able to work with their own initiative. An interest in some equine work would be welcome but not essential.

Company

The Tern Veterinary Group, has been based in Stafford Street, Market Drayton since the early twentieth century. At first the practice was based in the small office facing Stafford Street with a farrier and stables further up the yard.

In 2000 the present partners opened a brand new building designed to cater for large and small animal clients. At the same time the branch surgery at Newport was opened to cater for our growing clientele in the area.

The surgery is located on the Wynnstay site on Audley Avenue Industrial Estate.

From the outset we have sought to provide the best care for both our large and small animal clients alike. To achieve this end, we are constantly updating our facilities and equipment to ensure that the level of care provided is of the highest standard for all animals.
