Do you like working with pet owners as well as their pets!
Are you an adventurer at heart ready to experience life in a different part of the world for a while?
Are you someone that maintains their cool under pressure, yet loves to have fun in the right moments?
Are you ready to be paid what you are actually worth as a talented vet professional?
Are you OK with a bit of sand in your life?
If so then read on, we have the job of a lifetime to tell you all about!
Umm Suqeim Veterinary Centre is Dubai's premier 24 hour Veterinary Hospital. We have built a facility where we can practice the very best medicine possible to give our patients exceptional care. We started the practice back in 2014, and since then it has grown and grown to the point where we have nine vets (many of whom have advanced qualifications) and ten qualified veterinary nurses.
In addition to this we have dedicated nurse assistants, receptionists and a full-time pharmacist. All of which means you can really focus on being the vet rather than all things to all people. (A word about our nursing team.. they are the most competent and skilled team we’ve ever worked with.)
Our premises feature separate cat and dog clinics - we are a gold standard ISFM cat-friendly hospital. We are currently installing a 16 slice CT scanner to take our cases even further, faster. High spec ultrasound (Mylab Seven), full digital radiography & endoscopes complete the imaging. We have an ICU, a dedicated dental theatre (including dental x-ray, and two im3 machines so you won’t have to share a table!) and a rehab centre with hydrotherapy and physiotherapy. In fact this is a theme, we have a plethora of equipment - you name it & we have probably got it.
Now the really juicy bit if you want to grow to be an outstanding vet with a broad range of skills...because we lack vet specialists or referral centres in Dubai, we are the last frontier in helping the animals who need us. This might be scary to some, but rest assured you’ll be working with incredibly experienced vets who can and do handle everything.
With our skills, experience and equipment, we are effectively the local referral option and take the second opinions and as a result you will grow far faster than you would anywhere else in the western world. We appreciate that this isn’t for everyone, but for someone who wishes to exponentially develop their skills and experience - this is the perfect job!
Speaking of cases, we have a very wide and varied case-load in solely small animal practice. It’s guaranteed you will experience cases that are both challenging and rewarding, more than enough to sit a Certificate or Membership. If you do have a Certificate, you would make great use of your knowledge!
Let’s talk about our approach to cases. We provide exemplary medicine. We do this while taking account of the pet and family circumstances, because one size doesn’t fit all. The reason we started a 24 hour hospital was to take care of our patients every minute of every day.
So let’s talk about you.
You’ll be someone who has built a good level of knowledge and has a pragmatic approach to solving medical problems. For this role you will need a few years under your belt, but you will not be closed to new ideas and ways of doing things. So you’ll have experience, but also be open to collaborating and learning from those around you.
You’ll be a fun and energising person to be around. A glass half full kind of a person, who can see the positive side of life, even when things get stressful - as they inevitably do when you work as a vet.
One thing that matters a lot to us are the practice values, so we’re looking for people who share ours. They are: trust, honesty, loyalty, integrity, quality, effort and fairness.
You’ll absolutely have a sense of adventure (and fun). Dubai has much to explore and is an expat’s paradise location. Allied to that sense of adventure will be the courage to make bold leaps. Perhaps the thought of case diversity and career progress excites you again. Vaccines, spay and neuters don’t do it for you any more and you are ready for a larger variety of challenging cases you can get your teeth into.
In a busy hospital like ours, there is plenty of support, but we’ve noticed that the people who do best have the following qualities:
- They are driven - vet med is their calling.
- Effort focused - they get stuck in and are not mentally crippled by risk or errors. They learn.
- Empathy - they can connect with and understand their fellow humans!
- Capable - they have the basic surgical, medical and dental skills upon which to build.
- Team players - they prioritise the greater good
About the job
A day in the life of a vet at our hospital is very varied as you’d expect. Your day will be split between consulting and surgery. We tend to do our surgery in the morning and get things done by early afternoon. We also have consulting hours throughout the day. There are many vets who consult and work at the same time so you’ll always have the support of your colleagues.
Typical responsibilities will include:
- Routine consults
- Inpatient medicine
- Surgical procedures
- Managing critical care patients
- 24 hour hospital care
- Diagnostic workups including CT (We’ll teach you if you don’t know)
We do see a lot of emergency cases in Dubai so if you like ECC then this is a role you will love. Don’t be put off though if you need support for these cases. As long as you are willing to learn, we’ll support you in developing these skills.
Dubai is a fantastic place to live and work, with no pollution, a very cosmopolitan outlook and year-round sunshine. It is ideally situated to travel the world with both Europe, Africa and Asia a few hours away. We live in a thriving metropolis with a melting pot of cultures and foods, stunning beaches, excellent recreation pursuits and busy nightlife! Dubai has taken a very balanced approach to the pandemic which ensures high levels of safety whilst allowing relative normality.
