Nursing Edge – an introduction to emergency and critical care

At Vets Now, we are committed to the development of the next generation of the veterinary profession. That’s why we heavily invest in our induction programmes to support Registered Veterinary Nurses in discovering a route into emergency practice. With CPD-led training Nursing Edge is designed for RVN’s looking to take their first steps into ECC and will equip you with the skills and confidence needed to thrive in emergency practice.

Develop your emergency skills

Nursing Edge contains two weeks of virtual lectures with six weeks practical training taking place in your base clinic. The programme has been designed to give nurses the best start in a new emergency and critical care role, providing valuable training and a competitive salary from day one. Content includes;

  • Emergency diagnostics
  • Emergency surgery
  • Fluid therapy
  • Neurological emergencies

We look after you, so you can look after them

Recognising hard work is important to us. Our Nursing Edge Nurses are paid a salary from day one of the training programme and we offer a first-class benefits and rewards package that includes:

  • 7 weeks pro rata annual leave
  • Your birthday as a paid day off
  • Private medical insurance
  • £1125 CPD allowance plus 20 paid hours pro rata
  • UK Standard Pension contributions – 5% Employee/3% Employer
  • Professional membership fees
  • Up to 50% discounted staff pet care
  • Death in service of two times annual salary
  • Membership of employee wellbeing programme
  • Company sick, maternity, paternity and adoption pay schemes

A diverse caseload and a work-life balance – you can have both

Upon completion of the training programme, you will work an average of 40 hours per week with an average of 12 shifts per month, ideal for maximising a work-life balance. The rota includes a share of weekday nights, weekends, bank holidays and no more than three shifts in a row. Vets Now handles the largest emergency and critical care caseload in Europe and you will see a diverse range of both medical and surgical cases – an ideal opportunity for development and learning beyond the Nursing Edge programme.

Expansion, innovation and opportunity

Due to the continued expansion of our network of clinics and the exponential growth of our caseload, we are excited to announce the addition of several Registered Veterinary Nurse roles as part of our Nursing Edge training programme. Whether in Dundee or Witham, we have created brand new opportunities for you to join our teams:

Company

Vets Now provides this trusted service to more than 1000 veterinary practices across the UK — from 55 dedicated out-of-hours clinics and three 24/7 pet emergency hospitals. In total, we treat around 100,000 small animals every year — and during seasonal holidays, like Christmas and Easter, our highly-skilled staff answer around five queries an hour from worried pet owners. So whether you’re in Aberdeen, Belfast or Portsmouth we’re there for you and your pet when you need us most.

We’ve also pioneered other ways to help pets, pet owners and the veterinary profession, such as our comprehensive referrals service and providing our staff with industry-leading training and development opportunities. We also support the pet blood transfusion charity, Pet Blood Bank UK. Meanwhile, our three hospitals — in Glasgow, Manchester and Swindon — are home to some of the UK’s leading specialists in the field of emergency and critical care and provide care 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
