The Role
We are looking for an experienced Veterinary Surgeon, to join our supportive and empathetic team based at our veterinary hospital in Burnley. We ask that you deliver empathetic, trust-building consultations for wellness and ill/injured animals and demonstrate critical thinking and decision-making skills to create and implement diagnostic and therapeutic treatment plans.

This is a full-time position working 40 hours per week inclusive of working 1:6 weekends, therefore an average 4 day working week of 38 hours. Various shifts between 8am and 7.30pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 5pm Saturday and Sunday. Covering 2 Bank Holidays per year with a day off in Lieu. No emergency OOH on call, however, our surgeons do participate in a shared overnight inpatient rota in providing care for our hospitalised patients.

About Us
Oakmount Veterinary Hospital is situated in a thriving market town surrounded by breath-taking Pennine countryside, with fantastic travel links to the city of Manchester and Leeds and within easy commute to the Lake District. With a team of 8 vets, 11 RVNs, 4 SVNs, 2 kennel assistants, 6 receptionist and other support staff, we are committed to providing exceptional customer service and outstanding patient care. We have all the equipment you would expect - a suite of Idexx machines, Ultrasound, rigid laparoscopy, digital x-ray, digital dental x-ray, endoscope etc, but it is our friendly and supportive team that makes us who we are!

Applicant Requirements
You will be registered with the RCVS and will have clinical experience and confidence in your abilities to communicate with clients and perform much of the day-to-day work of a small animal Veterinary Surgeon. You will have a genuine fondness for people and be able to work well with clients and staff to achieve a good outcome and be able to work through the challenges that inevitably occur in busy hospitals. You will also have a desire to grow and be the type of person who seeks out feedback and opportunities to develop.

You will be the sort of person who is flexible. So, occasionally, if a case needs a little more attention or a rota goes sideways you are happy to get the job done or help a colleague out. This does not happen often because we schedule very carefully to make sure you have a life away from work. But as you have probably noticed in veterinary medicine, not everything is under our control, so having a team who “have each other’s back” is very important to us and helps us to enjoy a happy culture

As a BAME and LGBT+ inclusive employer, we are keen to hear from candidates from all minority and diverse groups.

As a Disability Confident Employer, we are keen to hear from candidates with disabilities and long-term health conditions and would be happy to discuss any reasonable adjustments needed during the recruitment process.

Company

Originally the practice mainly dealt with farm animals but also on a smaller scale, provided care for companion pets. Then in 1998 the large animal side of the business was passed over to our neighbouring practice to allow us to focus on providing veterinary care for companion animals.

In May 2001 we moved into larger premises in Trafaglar Street. This is at the crossroads of two of the main thoroughfares into Burnley. Our new practice is three times larger, in terms of floor area, with two operating theatres and much improved facilities for our in-patients. Our reception area has the added benefit of being easily accessible by less mobile clients and their pets.

With changes in the nature of the types of pets owned by the Burnley community, we evolved into a companion animal practice. We also treat a varied number of birds from budgerigars to parrots and sparrowhawk to owls. To ensure we offer our clients and patients good quality care and service, our vets and nurses regularly undertake further training to keep their skills up to date.

We offer a blood test to all patients that require general anaesthetic, just as you would have received when admitted for surgery in a human hospital. These important blood tests have revealed several cases of sub-clinical illness which has allowed us to change our routines to even further reduce the risk facing patients that undergo operations. We do charge for these optional tests but firmly believe that this added expence is well worth it for the health of our Very Important Patients (vip's).
