Job Details

We are looking for a veterinary surgeon to join us at Spring Lodge Vet Group in Essex. We have 6 sites working around a central, accredited Small Animal Hospital in Witham. The role involves 40 hours per week based on a 4 day week, within a rota system of 8am - 7pm.  This role encompasses varying shifts and clinic duties but branch continuity is prioritised for both staff and clients. We are a host practice for Vets Now, therefore no out of hours cover is required. We run an emergency only overlap service at the weekend for our clients only, from 2pm-6pm on Saturday once we have closed, and on Sunday from 8am to 6pm. This is based on a 1:10 rota. There is also a Saturday morning consult session, based on a 1:3/4 basis. Part time applications will also be considered.

At the hospital one vet will consult in the morning, one will take care of the ward patients and one will start on the ops list. Once consults are finished and wards are able to be left with the nurses both these vets will help with the ops list. Consults are then carried out by all vets during the afternoon/evening. If the vets starts at a consult only practice they would come to the hospital in the middle of the day to operate and return to complete consults in the afternoon. For vets at a standalone branch they would consult in the morning, then work through that branches op list before consulting at the other end of the day.

We are a RCVS accredited small animal hospital in Witham Essex with 5 other branches all a short drive from the hospital. The hospital has a full lab, separate isolation, cat and dog wards. We have an orthopaedic theatre, lots of surgical kit including laparoscopic equipment and various endoscopes. Both the hospital and standalone operating branches all have digital x-ray with three out of four having ultrasound facilities. We have a fantastic, friendly team of vets, nurses and support staff, that have a wide range of interests, and who provide support to each other whilst working within our busy clinic. We can offer excellent surgical and medical facilities as well as an interesting and varied caseload. We have all the usual kit that you would expect from a hospital standard clinic and undertake in-house orthopaedic procedures alongside laparoscopic spays and other laparoscopic procedures. We have 12 FTE vets, one of which is a certificate holder in surgery, 16 nurses, with a high proportion of RVN's, including surgical nursing diploma holders plus 4 VCA's and a dedicated reception team. We are active in the community and often sponsor local events. Although we are a big team we are a close team that all support each other. During non covid times we like to let our hair down regularly with a good party or just by celebrating personal events with each other. The main hospital in Witham has a main line train station for easy access to London and we are within driving distance to the East coast. We have a good mixture of surrounding country side and town and we are half an hour to Stanstead airport.

We require an experienced confident, enthusiastic vet, with previous sole charge experience and the ability to fully work up a full range of medical and surgical cases. You will have a clear focus on client communication and a desire to provide the best care possible for both patients and owners. Teamwork and excellence in clinical care should be high on your agenda.

Witham Centre

Powers Hall End, Witham, CM8 2HG

Spring Lodge Veterinary Hospital has been caring for animals in Witham for more than forty years, evolving from a chicken farm to a veterinary surgery in the 1950′s.

Since that time the practice has had three owners with the current owner Neil Hodson taking charge in 1992.

The main surgery at Witham gained hospital status in 1998 and has recently been re inspected and passed to ensure it still fulfils this title.

The practice has grown since 1992, from an existing staff of five to over 45 experienced members of staff. The Tiptree centre opened in 1997 and in 1999 the surgery in Great Notley Garden Village opened its doors. Spring Lodge took over the running of Mintern And Hill Vets, located in Chelmsford, in 2008.  Ingatestone Veterinary Centre is also part of the Spring Lodge Team and its purpose built centre opened in 2008.

Consultations take place at all branches. All surgical & medical cases requiring further treatment are either delt with on site or transferred to the main hospital in Witham via one of our veterinary ambulances.

There are eleven veterinary surgeons at Spring Lodge, five of which are working towards further qualifications in specialist subjects including surgery, dermatology, acupuncture and emergency and critical care. They are complemented by a team of twelve registered veterinary nurses and two student nurses. In addition we have patient care assistants to support the veterinary team. At each clinic we have dedicated veterinary receptionists who can assist and advise on how to keep you pet happy and in the best of health and of course a team of administrative staff to assist with the running of the clinics.

All members of the practice team are encouraged to continually develop their skills within the hospital through formal continuing professional development.

Our ‘out of hours’ care is provided by Vets Now Ltd.  They are an independent company who provide the equivalent of a pet A&E department for local practices  during the night and weekends.  We are lucky, as this service is run from our Witham Hospital so your animal can receive care 24 hours a day once it has been admitted to our Hospital.

Our aim is to provide a comprehensive service for all clients in a friendly and efficient manner.
