An exciting opportunity has arisen in Bury St Edmunds for a part time veterinary surgeon. You would be joining an experienced, dedicated team made up of 3 vets, 3 nurses, 1 SVN, 2 VCA’s and 1 receptionist.
The vet team consists of Vanessa and Ana who have 16+ years’ experience and have worked together for the past 10 years. We also have Dani who has 5 years’ experience. Our nurse team have a minimum of 7 years’ experience, our VCA’s all have at least 4 years’ experience and our receptionist is currently undergoing SQP training. We will endeavour to support your unique interests and to the best of our ability provide you with additional training / time off for training.
You will be joining a very close team with very low staff turnover, we have routine staff meetings but also go out for staff meals and drinks (before COVID-19!). Our staff report a very good work/life balance. The practice partner, Ana Xavier, graduated from Lisbon University in 2004, and worked in Utrecht, Netherlands until moving to Britain in 2006. Her main areas of interest are endocrinology, orthopaedics and acupuncture. Vanessa has a special interest in small furries and has completed her General Practitioner Certificate in Small Animal Medicine.
The practice is very well equipped with capnography, digital x-ray, ultrasound, full state of the art IDEXX lab (haematology, biochemistry, in-house T4, fructosamine, bile acids, cortisol, PCV), blood pressure monitoring, pulse oximeter, v-gel and separate dog, cat and isolation wards. The team see approx. 45% cats, 45% dogs and 10% small furries with approx. 45% insured clients. Orthopaedics (CCLR, FHNE, pinning), acupuncture and basic physiotherapy are all carried out in practice so we can guarantee exposure to a wide variety of cases.
Person Specification
You will be confident with all routine surgeries and 1st opinion consults. Most importantly, we are looking for an individual who cares deeply for their patients and wants to do the best for their clients.
This is a part time role working 16 – 18.5 hours per week with a weekend rota of 1 in 4. There will be no out of hours and only occasional sole charge, particularly on a Saturday. The surgery is located inside Pets at Home, with allocated parking to staff at the back of the surgery.

Locally owned practices with a world of support
At Vets for Pets we’re a network of practices that are owned and managed by the practice owners that run them. Because they’re locally owned, each practice has the freedom to serve patients and clients the way it thinks is best.
But crucially, being locally-owned also means enjoying a truly team-spirited atmosphere. We want all our colleagues to build lasting relationships with practice owners and team members as well as patients and clients.
And because we’re also part of a wider group, you’ll get all the support you need when you need it. That means state-of-the-art facilities, high quality CPD, financial stability and a real sense of job security.
With our framework, we’ve made it simpler and easier for you to help patients and clients live happier, healthier lives together. It’s about making the most of your expertise and bringing this to life in practise while being safe in the knowledge that you’re looked after too. Simply put, we offer locally owned practices with a world of support.

Local Practices
With us, no two practices are the same. We’re deeply rooted in our local communities and we want you to really get to know your patients and clients locally.
Being part of the Pets At Home Group
Being part of Vets for Pets means you’ll be part of our network of locally owned practices. Our practices are located across the country and are owned and run by our Joint Venture Partners (JVPs). Our Joint Venture Partnership model is unique and gives everyone the best of both worlds. Working within one of our practices you’ll get to work with the JVP who has the clinical freedom and autonomy to do things their own way.
As we’re part of a large respected organisation you’ll also enjoy the benefits of being part of a wider PLC Group. This means we can give you greater stability and job security during these uncertain times and beyond.
What’s more, we’ve worked hard to make sure everyone in our group can take part in a fun, friendly, professional and inclusive culture that allows you to bring your whole self to work and be at your very best.
