Surgery Information / Job Description

This is a true nursing position! If you came to join our wonderful out of hours team you would be working 7pm until 8am alongside a dedicated out of hours veterinary surgeon (our vets do not do on-call from home) and a veterinary care assistant each night. We also have a receptionist working until 9pm. You would be part of our amazing out of hours team providing gold standard 24 hour care for our hospitalised patients with a variety of needs from post-op monitoring to intensive care cases, and this is your chance to be a part of an amazing team.  Northampton Vets4pets is rated “Outstanding” in all six areas by RCVS. We are very proud to have won SPVS Well-being Medium Practice of the Year 2019, and think that we can offer a great work-life balance to our colleagues. Being a 10 vet, 24-hour hospital practice the caseload is high and variable. Commonly performed surgeries are cruciates, fracture repairs, TECABO, perineal urethrostomies, BOAS, skin flaps, caesareans and similar interesting cases.   We are located just an hour from London and Birmingham and Milton Keynes is 30 minutes away by car.

Person Specification

Our OOH RVNs are responsible for assisting our night vets with our inpatient care (something we take very seriously), taking and running diagnostic samples, placing IV Catheters, preparing patients for theatre for emergency surgery, monitoring anaesthesia, calculating and administering patient medication, x-raying patients, running the occasional nurse clinic and assisting in delivering amazing client care. Our caseload is extremely varied- you could be placing a feeding tube one minute and helping to deliver a litter of puppies via c-section the next. As a 24-hour hospital we not only provide out of hours care for our own patients, but we also cover 8 other Vets4Pets practices in the area so our nights can be busy but extremely rewarding. We also work closely with the RSPCA and other local charities. We have built exceptionally strong and trusted relationships with our clients and we are looking for an RVN who enjoys this side of the role just as much as the clinical responsibilities.

Benefits

Our offer to you:

  • Pastoral care, emotional wellbeing and support, mental health first aiders on-site
  • Free access to the RetailHub wellbeing service including access to professional support and counselling
  •  Birthday leave
  •  Volunteer days paid- paid days off for you to volunteer for your chosen charity
  • Free gym membership
  • Regular social events paid for by the practice
  • 1 night per week up to full-time hours and a flexible rota to suit- we can also offer a mixture of nights and days if required. Our current vacancy is for part-time, however, we are also interested in hearing from RVNs looking for a full-time role
  • CPD funded
  • Free onsite car parking
  • Pension scheme
  • Exclusive colleague discounts
  • Discounted pet care
  • Death in service- 4 times your annual salary
  • Paid memberships – RCVS, BVA, VDS, BSAVA
  • Generous salary depending on experience

By joining this lovely team you will be working alongside 10 vets, 9 RVNs, 4 SVNs, 7 receptionists, 2 practice managers and 4 VCAs. The JVP is a certificate holder in general practice with 20 years’ experience, and we have two vets who are advanced practitioners and another two vets working towards their certificates. We hold regular clinical meetings, discuss protocols and run an open and honest culture encouraging development, change and support for our colleagues.   Above all else, we value someone who is a team player; committed to our patients and clients; and is keen to be a part of our team!
