Veterinary Surgeon - Full Time - Bury St Edmunds

Surgery Information / Job Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen in Bury St Edmunds for a full-time veterinary surgeon. You would be joining an experienced, dedicated team made up of 3 vets, 3 nurses, 2 SVN, 1 VCA’s and 2 receptionists.

The vet team consists of Vanessa and Ana who have 15+ years’ experience and have worked together for the past 10 years. We also have Dani who has 4 years’ experience. Our nurse team have a minimum of 7 years’ experience, our VCA’s all have at least 2 years’ experience and our receptionist is currently undergoing SQP training. We will endeavor to support your unique interests and to the best of our ability provide you with additional training / time off for training.

You will be joining a very close team with very low staff turnover, we have routine staff meetings but also go out for staff meals and drinks (before COVID-19!). Our staff report a very good work/life balance.

The practice partner, Ana Xavier, graduated from Lisbon University in 2004, and worked in Utrecht, Netherlands until moving to Britain in 2006. Her main areas of interest are endocrinology, orthopaedics and acupuncture. Vanessa has a special interest in small furries and has completed her General Practitioner Certificate in Small Animal Medicine.

The practice is very well equipped with capnography, digital x-ray, ultrasound, full state of the art IDEXX lab (haematology, biochemistry, in-house T4, fructosamine, bile acids, cortisol, PCV), blood pressure monitoring, pulse oximeter, v-gel and separate dog, cat and isolation wards. The team see approx. 45% cats, 45% dogs and 10% small furries with approx. 45% insured clients. Orthopaedics (CCLR, FHNE, pinning), acupuncture and basic physiotherapy are all carried out in practice so we can guarantee exposure to a wide variety of cases.

Person Specification

You will ideally be confident with all routine surgeries and 1st opinion consults, although this position could suit an enthusiastic recent graduate – mentoring would be provided! Most importantly, we are looking for an individual who cares deeply for their patients and wants to do the best for their clients.

This is a full time role working 40 hours per week with a weekend rota of 1 in 4. There will be no out of hours and only occasional sole charge, particularly on a Saturday. The surgery is located inside Pets at Home, with allocated parking to staff at the back of the surgery.

In return, we offer:

• Excellent salary - £31,000-£50,000 (depending on experience)
• Generous CPD/Support to do a certificate or other qualification
• Pension scheme
• Paid memberships (RCVS, VDS, BVA)
• Great clients and lovely colleagues
• Corporate perks and staff discounts

Meet Vets4Pets

We put pets first

Beyond all else, we’re committed to animal health and welfare, and we absolutely put pets first. The most powerful partnerships we have are with pets and their owners. This is at the heart of what we do and always will be.

Vets4Pets Northampton Wins Vet Wellbeing Award

Colleague mental health and wellbeing have always been highly important to Jenny Millington and Sally Courtney of Vets4Pets Northampton. So much so, that during the past 12 months, they and their colleagues have implemented a number of fantastic initiatives to support in this area. These efforts have resulted in the practice recently receiving the 2019 Vet Wellbeing Award, medium-sized practice category, from the Society of Practising Vets (SPVS), in partnership with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons’ (RCVS) Mind Matters Initiative.

We help our nurse colleagues thrive

We know first-hand the tremendous contribution vet nurses make to the smooth running of a practice and to animal health and welfare. We’re therefore committed to recognising and celebrating these contributions and to providing our nurse colleagues with learning opportunities specific to them. Our annual Vet Nurses Conference (a Vets4Pets-only event) offers a full day of industry-leading CPD.

We are very much aiming to be an association where people can seek support for themselves and others and where employers and groups and other associations can seek support from us regarding the promotion of diversity and inclusion.
