Job Details

The Culture
It's a one centre practice, so a really sociable and friendly place to work with a good degree of professionalism. Our goal is to practice to a high standard and we have a good team approach to this goal.

We do have a small branch surgery near by.  It is appointments only and basic consults, no operations, open an hour and a half each day and our full-time vets spend only very occasional mornings there.

What matters in practice
A good client experience, client satisfaction is important - we want our clients to be comfortable and trusting of the care we can provide their pets.

We also want to provide a fulfilling work environment where our staff enjoy working and feel that they are valued as employees and team members. If someone wishes to study for a certificate, it is supported and paid for.

Great place to work
It is a sociable and friendly place, where staff have the freedom to pursue their cases in their own way/time. We hope that our vets feel that they have clinical freedom but within a supportive environment. We have several experienced vets and because we are essentially based on one site, there is ample opportunity to discuss cases and approaches with colleagues.

Professional environment, our staff really get on.  All our staff are supportive of each other in a good team environment.

Our low staff turnover seems to support all of the above.

Successful Applicant
We are looking for a passionate vet with excellent communication skills, and is very good with people and with some experience of small animal practice in the UK. We would like to find somebody who is looking to develop their veterinary skills and increase their knowledge. They will be happy to work and thrive as part of a team and if you are looking to settle in a really pleasant (and relatively rain free) part of England, then all the better - although if you are simply looking for the best next job you can find, then that's OK too.

We want someone who is relatively competent - need to be very good with people, very good communicator, and able to work within a busy first opinion practice.  A little too busy for a new graduate, so someone with some degree of experience, perhaps 2 years - would be a perfect 2nd job for someone. A degree of independence is important, but support is there if needed.
Don't have a lot of time to provide the level of support a new grad might need.

The Role
As an experienced veterinary surgeon, you will have the freedom to work up your own cases to the best of your abilities. The role will include a full range of small animal veterinary work including routine surgery and consultations but you will have the freedom to develop more specialised skills with full clinical support.  Almost all of your time will be spent in the main premises but you will be expected to carry out very occasional routine consulting sessions at our branch surgery (open 1 1/2 hours a day)

We are offering a varied, fulfilling and exciting role that will build your confidence, allow you to develop as a vet and a person and in short allow you to be the vet that you want to be.

The Package

  • Our salary will be attractive, favourable and based on your experience.
  • You will work a four-day week with the same day off each week and an additional Friday off every six weeks.
  • You will work one weekend in six with the other five weekends completely free.
  • We give 20 days of holiday each year in addition to bank holidays.
  • We also give four days off each year to pursue CPD.
  • We are happy to fund any relevant CPD and if there is a course that you feel will develop your veterinary career then we will pay for it.
  • Pleasant accommodation can be provided until the right person gets sorted

Company

The Colne Valley Veterinary Practice was founded in 1947 and was initially based in a small building behind a house in Military Road in Colchester. In those early days there were two vets and their practice treated both large and small animals. The Practice steadily grew until it occupied not just the buildings behind the house but the house itself.

In 1995, we ended our services for large animals and concentrated entirely on domestic pets. We are now classed as a 100% small animal veterinary practice and we are an accredited small animal general practice  in the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons practice standards scheme.

By 1998, we had outgrown our Military Road home and we moved our main premises to a new purpose built site on Maudlyn Road in Colchester. This is where we continue to be based today. Our building is large and well equipped with five consulting rooms and a large dispensary. We have excellent surgical facilities and we are very well equipped with diagnostic tools such as an x-ray machine, an ultrasound machine and several endoscopes (cameras that allow us to look into animals' lungs, stomachs and intestines.)

We also have a well-equipped practice laboratory. Our building has separate kennel rooms for cats, dogs and exotic pets. In short, we enjoy working in a large, comfortable and well equipped veterinary practice.

We have five full-time veterinary surgeons and four part-time veterinary surgeons working at the practice. In addition, we employ nine qualified Veterinary Nurses (six of whom are full-time.) We are a vet nurse training practice. We have a full time kennel maid. We have a practice accounts manageress, nine part-time receptionists and four cleaners.

Our practice is constantly evolving and adapting to take onboard new ideas and to take on new challenges. All our vets and nurses regularly attend courses and meetings to keep up to date with new techniques and ideas in the veterinary world.
