Small Animal Internal Medicine Internship

Vets Now is the European leader in the provision of Emergency and Critical Care. As well as European Board of Veterinary Specialisation Residency programs in Emergency and Critical Care and Surgery, we also offer a well-established Internship programme in our referral hospitals in Glasgow and Manchester.

We are proud to announce that our Glasgow Hospital is now inviting applications for an Internal Medicine Intern. This is a unique opportunity to collaboratively work with clinicians from across our Internal Medicine, Oncology and Imaging disciplines in an award-winning facility and expand skill, knowledge and experience in a discipline of your choice.

Embracing the learning environment and being inspired by our experts requires an Intern committed to integrity and ethical standards with a strong emphasis on client and patient care. Interns must proactively engage in their own training and career advancement by attending pre-planned seminars, journal clubs and local teaching opportunities. They will also be responsible for working with clinical mentors to actively take part in research projects.

Interns will work with their supervising clinician to participate effectively in all aspects of planning, diagnosis and treatment of cases. Animal welfare and the ethics of interventions must be considered by balancing practical and financial factors when determining appropriate patient care. Therefore, the ability to apply prior knowledge and experience to maintain the high clinical standards expected within our hospitals is essential.

Interns will openly engage in case discussions with the senior supervising clinicians, residents and senior nursing team and should contribute to a positive, informative, respectful and inclusive environment for all. Attention to detail, particularly with maintaining accurate records and written correspondence is also a key component of this role.

To support the day to day running of the hospital under the direction of the supervising clinician, we require strong communication skills, compassion, reliability and professionalism coupled with the ability to priortise and remain calm during challenging circumstances.

To be considered for this role, applicants must possess a Veterinary degree which is recognised by the RCVS, be a member of the RCVS and have completed a small animal rotating internship prior to commencement of this role.

Applicants must also be eligible to work in the UK and have the appropriate Visa documents. It would also be desirable that applicants provide evidence of competency in speaking English, as determined by a formal qualification in English (such as IELTS or TOEFL).

This post is for a 12 to 18-month period, with an ideal start date of January 2021, however alternative start dates can be discussed.

Vets Now provides this trusted service to more than 1000 veterinary practices across the UK — from 55 dedicated out-of-hours clinics and three 24/7 pet emergency hospitals. In total, we treat around 100,000 small animals every year — and during seasonal holidays, like Christmas and Easter, our highly-skilled staff answer around five queries an hour from worried pet owners. So whether you’re in Aberdeen, Belfast or Portsmouth we’re there for you and your pet when you need us most.

We’ve also pioneered other ways to help pets, pet owners and the veterinary profession, such as our comprehensive referrals service and providing our staff with industry-leading training and development opportunities. We also support the pet blood transfusion charity, Pet Blood Bank UK. Meanwhile, our three hospitals — in Glasgow, Manchester and Swindon — are home to some of the UK’s leading specialists in the field of emergency and critical care and provide care 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
