The Oncology department at Pride Veterinary Centre is currently comprised of one clinician, an ECVIM–CA (Oncology) Diplomate, one discipline-specific intern and two veterinary nurses. Rotating interns and students from the University of Nottingham rotate through our hospital. This is full time internship for 1 year.

Our current case load for Oncology varies between 4 and 8 new cases a week plus c 15-20 chemotherapy patients currently. We are seeing approximately 80% dogs and 20% cats. The service works alongside various disciplines: internal medicine, surgery, neurology, anaesthesia, ophthalmology, dermatology, exotics and cardiology.

The facilities at Pride Veterinary Centre include MRI scanner (1.5T GE), 16 slice CT scanner (GE), digital radiograph suite, 3 GE ultra-sound units including 1 for echo scans in cardiology service. Also endoscopy, fluoroscopy (GE), five surgical theatres, intensive care unit, isolation ward, laboratory staffed by laboratory technicians, and physiotherapy unit with hydrotherapy pool and underwater treadmill staffed by physiotherapists. The hospital is staffed 24 hours, 7 days per week.

Duties of the intern:

  • Arrive before morning appointments to assess hospitalised patients
  • Be present at rounds in the morning and present selected cases in a professional manner
  • Hand-over cases to the night team for appropriate continuity of care
  • Do consultations on routine and emergency cases assigned by attending clinicians
  • Help the Oncology nurses in their tasks
  • Organisation of the daily procedures
  • Placement of intravenous catheters
  • Collection of blood, urine and faecal samples
  • Sedation of animals
  • Manage chemotherapy clinics
  • Administer chemotherapy
  • Monitoring of sedated or anaesthetised animals
  • Restrain animals for procedures
  • Be tidy and dressed professionally
  • Be up to date with medical records
  • Work evening shifts and weekend shifts on a rotating basis with other interns from the general program and specialty programs

The intern is NOT expected to:

  • Work overnight shifts (except out of hour call outs if deemed necessary by the attending medicine clinician)
  • Be in sole charge of cases without specialist supervision. The supervision will be on site during working hours or by telephone out of hours (for the latter, a clinician on call would be able to come on site if deemed necessary)

Requirements for the position:

  • Ideally, the candidate would have at least two years of clinical experience in general practice and would have performed a one-year rotating internship
  • Desire to pursue a residency is not a requirement. However, this internship program is aimed at preparing the candidate for a residency
  • Be a member of the RCVS
  • Good English language both verbal and written
  • Good communication skills, punctuality, ability to work and think clearly under pressure, good interpersonal and enthusiasm for oncology and internal medicine
  • Be able to work efficiently, understanding the time constraints and fast pace of a busy private small animal hospital
