Veterinary Surgeon – Hong Kong
Join one of Hong Kong’s largest international veterinary teams for a truly diverse clinical experience! Hong Kong is fantastic, stable with Asia in reach.
As one of Hong Kong’s most established veterinary brands, the AMC is the go-to location for many of Hong Kong’s pet owners. Solid nursing teams under-pin excellent patient care whilst an experienced veterinary team is easily accessible on-line across the locations for case discussion.
An experienced leadership team understands the need for a work-life balance providing rota flexibility: with the annual leave after the night shift week a total of 8-10 weeks of annual leave provides ample opportunity to travel around Asia.
Dr Beatrice of AMC, Mong Kok says “ When I arrived in Hong Kong the close knit team in Mong Kok made it easy to adjust to clinical practice here. While the animals and their illnesses are mostly similar, one of the main differences is the need for translators in consults which means there’s always a pair of trained hands to hold patients and this also takes the weight off admin work for the vet through the day. Clients are generally very compliant and want to work their pets up thoroughly, and long 30 minute consults allows for this.
Hong Kong is a really welcoming international city, and I enjoy all aspects of living here. Easy access to beaches, hikes, and mountains plus generous time off allows for a good work life balance and fantastic quality of life..”
Overseas media greatly inflate the troubles in Hong Kong with life going on as normal, excepting a few irregular incidences in certain locations.

A rolling 9d per fortnight rota, no routine emergency work usually working 9am to 7pm. Hospital teams have local nurses and Philippine vets as vet techs. There are 5 locations across HK: all locations are anaesthesia, dental, surgical (both soft tissue and orthopaedic) capable, with Idexx in-house laboratories, digital x-ray and ultrasound.
Every 2 months each vet performs 1 week of night shifts at the Mong Kok 24-hour hospital: the following week is annual leave on-top of the annual leave allowance.
Case load and approach is reasonably similar to the UK with a strong preventive medicine ethos: tropical infectious diseases are common, along with the usual range of cases requiring surgical intervention. Senior vets are orthopaedic capable and keen to teach.
Two-monthly clinical discussion forums bring the team together, either on-line or in-person, for treatment output and clinical quality discussions.
New graduate candidates are inducted over a 3-month period.
