Job Details

Looking for an experienced vet who is a good team player, confident with sole charge, and competent at performing routine operations unassisted to join our friendly team.

The Practice
AAS Vets are a well-established practice in Gloucestershire. We have four branches and a good client base.

The Role
Looking for an experienced, full-time vet who is a good team player, confident with sole charge, and competent at performing routine operations to join our friendly team. The ideal candidate would be someone who is confident in the veterinary field, happy with sole charge – as would be expected to work as the sole vet when rota’d in to work at branches, alongside nursing and support staff. They would also have their share at work at the main ‘hub’ of AAS Vets in Abbeydale.

The day usually begins with 10-minute consultations between 9am-10.30am. After a break, it’s on to operations. The branches undertake routine operations such as neutering, dental procedures, lump removals and stitch ups etc. The main hub is Abbeydale veterinary centre, where you will have these ‘routine’ ops, but also the ability to work up cases with a range of facilities including digital xray, doppler ultrasound, video endoscopy, orthopaedic operations and more!

The middle of the day, after completing ops (usually 2pm) until evening surgery at 5pm doesn’t require you to stay in practice. We rota our vets to have a ‘vet on-call’ during daytime ‘quiet times’ which means you could be out and about, as our vets do – walking the dogs or relaxing at home etc. but just keeping their phones on them in case of an emergency. This allows our vets to have a great work-life balance!

Evening consult periods (5-7pm) are again 10-minute consultation slots. We have NO OOH! We use an out-of-hours provider so your nights and public holidays are yours to enjoy! We do allow non-intensive care patients to stay at our Abbeydale branch overnight, and responsibility of those patients lies with the vet in charge of the case – but we do have CCTV which can be accessed on your mobile device, and plentiful nursing staff to assist in overnight visits where required.

We do aim to provide a half-day off per week too to improve work-life balance.

Weekends are 1:4 rota, and Saturdays generally consist of consults at our Stroud branch 9-10am, Quedgeley branch 10.30-11.30am, and then Abbeydale 12.30 – 2.30pm. Between 2.30-5:30pm, vets have the phones in case of emergencies and support of a veterinary nurse if required. At 5.30, phones are diverted to our OOH vets. Sundays consist of consults at Quedgeley 10-11am, and then Abbeydale 12-2. Phones are diverted to the OOH provider at 2pm. We pay mileage for travel between branches.

Successful Candidate
We are looking for a good team player, and knowledgeable member of staff. Good with clients and happy to work as part of a team and alone. We are friendly and laid back here, and like to get to know our co-workers – we are happy to share our knowledge so someone who is happy to ask and answer questions would benefit us and themselves.

The Package
From January 2020, we are increasing our annual holiday to 25 days plus 8 bank holidays pro-rata, plus birthday off. We offer a generous CPD allowance, and other extras such as annual free eye tests etc. There is the option to be funded for certificate courses, which are approved on a case-by-case basis after a year of employment.
