Veterinarian - Shanghai, China

Shanghai, China. A country of contrasts. A world city. This is an opportunity for an experienced practitioner to join our international standard hospital in Shanghai, and experience life in a fascinating country. China is the fastest developing pet care market in the world. Concordia Petcare was opened in September 2018 and is looking for a veterinarian to compliment our team.

The leader is Dr Alasdair Hotston Moore who is an extremely experienced referral clinician, with particular interests in soft tissue surgery, endoscopy and the application of CT. The successful applicant will be the second western vet and have several years of experience in high quality first opinion practice in Europe (or similar environment), and a strong interest in internal medicine, dermatology or diagnostic imaging would be welcomed. A post graduate qualification would be an advantage, but we would most value someone with a confident and competent approach.

The team is completed by three Chinese vets and our vet techs. An interest in helping the team develop is essential, and an interest in formal or informal teaching outside the clinic is welcomed. Our facilities are modern and well equipped, with a CT and ultrasound from GE, rigid and flexible endoscopes, ECG, Idexx machines and inpatient facilities (vet techs on site overnight whenever we have inpatients). We work in English so there is no requirement to speak Mandarin.

We have a mixture of foreign English-speaking clients and Chinese, many of whom prefer to use English. The local team are always available for translation when required. You will need a high standard of spoken and written English to give confidence to our clients and local staff. The case load is a mixture of first opinion and more complex cases. We have access to local laboratories for external tests, and Alasdair is generally available to help with CT or endoscopy if these are new to you. The hospital is in a new suburb of Shanghai, within a few minutes of the main railway station and domestic airport (Hongqiao), ideally placed for your exploration of China in your free time.

We work a 5 day week, including one weekend day. On call is covered by the local team, although being available for advice and (very rare) on site attendance is required. This is a permanent position and preference will be given to applicants wanting a two-year contract, but shorter appointments will be considered for exceptional candidates. Personal relocation costs will be covered, together with one return flight to Europe (or equivalent) each year.
