Job Details

WittenVet for Independent small animal practice, North Devon. Working in well-equipped practice with 4 cert holders. 24-hour nursing.

The Practice
Witten Park moved to new purpose built premises in 2016 and has grown ever since, hence the need for an extra vet. RCVS PSS accredited. We have 4 cert holders (2x ophthalmology, 1x medicine and 1x surgery) and all the expected kit to support them (TTA kit, digital x ray, operating microscope, slit lamp, decent lab etc). We see second opinion eye cases. This means that the practice can support you in your career both with all the kit you might want and also the veterinary skills on hand.

Witten Park 1The practice has longstanding clients and longstanding staff. We are looking for someone who wants to further their career and work within a team of  experienced clinicians and VN's. We have a large main site and one small branch staffed on rotation. This leads to excellent client continuity and continuity of care, which makes your job more rewarding. The practice is owned by two vets who work full time at the practice, so if having to run everything by head office is getting you down, you can say goodbye to all that. You can have a full autonomy here and work up cases the way you want to with no corporate targets to chase. We believe that financial monitoring of veterinary surgeons in practice is not the right thing to do!

Witten 10Our client base is a mix of retirees who have moved in from the cities, locals and holiday makers. Clients are generally pretty good and loyal. I think we are lucky in that respect with having a traditional mindset of loyal clients. We are based on a 3 acre site with agility course, dog training paddock and a few pet sheep. We are small animal, so mainly dogs and cats, but also with a large tortoise contingent and a few horses sneaking in via the ophthalmology service.

Witten Park 3Location
We are in an area of outstanding natural beauty and a few minutes from a blue flag beach, an hour from Exmoor and an hour and half from Dartmoor. So if surfing, hiking, running, rowing, golf, climbing etc are your thing, or just walking the dog on a beach in the lunch hour is more your style, then this is the place to be.

Witten Park 6The Role
The vacancy is for a full time position, but we also would encourage part time applications to apply as we may well be able to create a job share. Minimum 6months experience. Mix of consulting and surgery. Our rota will be 1:6 on call or 1:12 for job share. Full time working pattern is half day off  each week, Friday pm off each rota cycle and Monday afternoon off after weekend on call.  2 hour lunch break if on call that evening. 6pm last appointment. This all leads to a good work life balance and I find that working a quiet on call rota with time off in the week is better than working till 7pm every night, commuting home knackered etc. Full time at 4 days per week also an option.

Witten Park 4Successful Candidate
Ideal candidate would be a vet who is looking for a long term post to develop their career both in terms of their personal autonomy and abilities and as part of a successful growing practice.

Company

Witten Park 10

Witten Lodge has been serving the local community for over 40 years as a mixed practice. Messers Rabbitch and Atkinson moved the practice from the Pill in Bideford to its present day site (a former dentist's surgery) on Heywood Road some 36 years ago. At that time the practice was a very mixed practice serving farming clients in the area, pets and even the local zoo.

Witten Park 7

In 2002 we made the transition to a dedicated companion animal service and we have gone from strength to strength.  We are able to devote all our resources to  providing personal and friendly care for our  patients and their owners.  We believe that continuity of care is vital in providing a quality service and our staff work as a close knit team to achieve this.
