Job Details

Oak Pic 1We have an exciting opportunity for an ambitious and energetic small animal vet to join our expanding, independent, mixed practice.

The Practice
The Oak Veterinary Group is a friendly independent mixed veterinary practice, with a family feel. Based in Pembrokeshire and covering the areas around Haverfordwest, Fishguard and St Davids, we treat our team, pets and clients as individuals.  We listen to our team, and support and encourage personal and professional development. Our small animal team comprises 7 vets, with a variety of interests, expertise and experience. We run puppy socials, nurse clinics and have nurses on call. Pembrokeshire is a rural area, and is a playground for outdoor sports enthusiasts with its stunning scenery, beaches and coast path – a safe place to live and a great quality of life, with enough time off to enjoy it.

We aim to give our clients a caring, friendly and professional service, whilst enjoying our work and being part of a community.

Oak Pic 2The Role
You will be joining our small animal team. Our main base is at our Haverfordwest surgery which is equipped to tackle most cases – we do our own orthopaedics, medical work-ups and this is where we care for our own in-patients. 3-4 vets work from Haverfordwest each day so there is plenty of support and opportunity to discuss cases. Our Fishguard and St Davids surgeries are single-vet, and the successful candidate will only work from the branches when they are confident to do so. Our Fishguard surgery also houses our busy aquatic treadmill for hydrotherapy.

Our workload is about 55% dogs, 40% cats and 5% small furries with the occasional backyard chicken, tortoise or parrot.

We have an RCVS Advanced Practitioner in small animal surgery, and 3 assistants studying for certificate level qualifications in small animal medicine / practice and behaviour, and nurses with qualifications in hydrotherapy, massage and rehabilitation, and working towards behaviour / training. We are able to manage many cases in-house. We have the breadth and flexibility to accommodate a recent graduate, or someone with experience wishing to pursue an interest, and a better quality of life.

Our opening hours are 8am-7pm Mon-Fri, 8.30am-1pm Sat, on rota. The successful applicant would bring our rota to 1:7. In the week there would usually be 1 night on call (unless working the weekend before/after), and you would cover evening surgery only on that night. Otherwise you will finish at 5pm (with one full afternoon off per week).  We do 1 in 7 weekends (Sat and Sun including consulting from 8.30am-1pm Saturday only), and you would get the following Friday off, plus 1 in 7 Fri night/ Saturday mornings (consulting 8.30am – 1pm), for which you would get Monday morning off in lieu. Directors play a full and equal role in the rota.

Our aim is to practise excellent veterinary medicine and surgery in a beautiful area of the country.

Successful Candidate
Our ideal candidate would be an enthusiastic, positive thinking all-rounder, who was able to communicate well with colleagues and clients alike. You would enjoy discussing cases with clients and be able to bring them on the journey. You would be confident to share your knowledge and participate in in-house training and meetings.

You would be confident consulting and with all basic surgeries, although support would be available for a recent graduate to help fill in any knowledge or skills gaps. They would be focussed, reliable and trustworthy.

You would be happy to work as part of a team, as well as on your own initiative.

The Package

  • We offer 5 days paid CPD (budget £1500 per year)
  • Membership of RCVS, BVA and VDS.
  • Sick pay and locum insurance
  • 33 days holiday per year (5 weeks plus 8 bank holidays, with any bank holidays on-call taken back as a day in lieu)
