Job Details

We have a fantastic opportunity for a companion animal vet to join our small, friendly team in Wakefield.

The practice:
A small, laid back, friendly, happy team with most of the members being long established. You’ll have time to work up your cases properly with clinical freedom. Plenty of time off as we believe you can’t practice veterinary medicine and surgery to a high standard without adequate down time. Lots of exciting plans ahead for the practice which include aiming to achieve ISFM cat friendly status. Cake day on Fridays!

The role:
Hours to suit the candidate as much as is possible. No on call duties but responsibility for any inpatients one night a week - there is a nurse on site overnight to care for any inpatients so very rare to need to attend the surgery at night. Weekend inpatient care will be moving to a local provider next year when their new hospital opens.

Successful candidate:
Will ideally have 2 years’ experience. Will have excellent communication skills. Will complement our supportive, friendly team.

The package:
Membership of BVA and one other professional body of your choice. CPD funded and supported with £1,000 annual allowance. Health shield scheme. Part-time salary will be pro-rata.

Company

The aim of the practice has always been and always will be to provide the best possible care in a friendly and compassionate environment. Our ethos is to treat our patients as if they were our own and our clients the way we would expect to be treated.

Consultations are by appointment from 8.00a.m. to 7.30p.m. Monday to Friday, and from 8.00a.m. To 4.00p.m. on Saturdays. We recognise that both clients and their pets are often stressed during their visits to vets, by operating an appointment system this reduces both the waiting time and the stress levels to a minimum. Palmer & Duncan are one of the few practices in the area still providing their own emergency service out with the normal surgery hours. This is partly because we believe that if you entrust the care of your pet to the surgery from 8.00a.m. to 7.30p.m, then we have a duty of care to your pet from 7.30p.m. to 8.00a.m, but another major consideration is that many animals that require care during the night or at weekends, are already on treatment, and therefore without knowing the animal or having access to the medical history it is difficult to provide the correct care. To maintain a proper level of care for inpatients a member of the nursing team remains on the premises 24/7, so that care levels can be maintained throughout the day and night.

Palmer & Duncan are committed to maintaining a high level of care to their patients and clients and therefore have a continuing education programme for all members of staff, and have been accredited as a tier 2 practice by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS accreditation is awarded to a Practice after inspection and certifies that the Practice conforms to designated standards).
