Veterinary Surgeon  (Shelter Medicine Programme)

Wood Green the Animals Charity, Kings Bush Farm, Huntingdon, Cambs

c. £42.2k to £55.1k per annum

We have an exciting new opportunity for an experienced and passionate vet with a surgical bias to join the team of RVC vets working at the purpose built facilities at Wood Green the Animals Charity site at Kings Bush farm in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire.

The 52 acre site is set in beautiful countryside and is one of the largest multispecies Shelters in Europe. There is a self-contained veterinary suite which was purpose built in 2012, with three operating theatres, and radiography/ultrasound facilities - including dental radiography, to facilitate provision of excellent first opinion veterinary care to the animals that Wood Green helps daily from cats and dogs to chickens, guinea pigs and rabbits.

The post holder will oversee final year RVC veterinary students spending time at the shelter learning first day skills and how to deliver high quality shelter medicine care. Your role will be to ensure delivery of the RVC’s clinical and teaching goals in an efficient and caring way, including teaching of neuter and dental surgeries. Confidence in your own skills as well as experience in clinical teaching, is beneficial.

As a role model for RVC students, excellent communication skills and the ability to provide and receive feedback are essential. You should have a strong focus on the importance of preventative health care - including confidence and experience in providing a high quality high volume neuter service. A certificate or strong experience in basic orthopaedic surgery and/or dentistry would be an advantage.

The role is 5 days a week 8.30-4.30p.m with no evenings, although flexible working patterns and job sharing is an option. Weekends are currently 1 in 3, working Saturday and Sunday half days (9.30a.m to 12.30p.m) consulting/checks only. A lieu day is provided the following week when a weekend is worked.

We offer a generous reward package including 6 weeks annual leave pro rata, and unlimited free access to RVC online CPD to support personal development plans.

Company

It has been over two hundred years since our doors first opened in central London and over fifty years since we developed a presence in rural Hertfordshire.

Since that time we have grown to become the UK’s largest and only specialist veterinary institution, offering an exceptional environment for developing commitment and talent among both staff and students.

We focus on educating the brightest and best students in the veterinary sciences as well as providing support for the veterinary profession.  The College appeared in the popular Channel 4 series 'Inside Natures Giants' and Our Queen Mother Hospital for Animals featured in the critically acclaimed BBC Series Super Vets, which demonstrates how passionate we are about improving the health and welfare of animals.

RVC staff play a key role in ensuring that we maintain our position as one of the leaders in our field; through supporting our academic and research community and maintaining high levels of service within our hospitals, teaching facilities and across the Estate.

Whether you are seeking a new career challenge or a job that really makes a difference, it’s worth taking a closer look at the RVC. A passion for being the best you can be is something we are most definitely looking for.
