RVN required for referral practice in Leeds. Basic salary approx. 30k. Rota of 1-in-6 to include nights and weekends. Pension and health care schemes.

The Role

General nursing duties

  • Maintain RCVS registration as a veterinary nurse (RVN)
  • Participate in the nursing hospital rota as requested by your supervisor and be ready forwork at the start time of your shift
  • Provide exceptional nursing care to patients in all areas of the hospital
  • Assist the veterinary surgeon as required, at all times
  • Maintain professional standards at all times
  • Comply with all professional regulations and legislation, and standards associated with independent accreditation such as the RCVS Practice Standards Scheme
  • Comply with the hospitals policies and protocols
  • Follow and implement the hospital infection control programme at all times
  • Performing Schedule 3 procedures under the guidance of the veterinary surgeon and according to experience
  • Assist in administration of drugs
  • Deliver nursing care that constantly aims to improve patient safety and outcomes by engaging with clinical governance initiatives
  • Help to ensure the smooth progression of each case throughout the hospital; prep room, imaging, operating theatres and wards
  • Communicate a positive image of the hospital and its services at all times
  • Be friendly, helpful and approachable to all members of staff and clients
  • Enjoy working as a member of a supportive team but also demonstrate an ability to use your own initiative
  • Liaise with the Client Advocate regularly or when requested with regards to the progress of the hospital

Surgical/Anaesthesia

  • Liaise with the veterinary surgeon and other members of the team to produce an efficiently run procedure list. Work as part of the theatre team assisting clinicians with clinical procedures. Understand clearly the needs and wants of the operating surgeon through active listening and reflect your understanding back to them
  • Maintain and prepare sterile supplies and instruments in the instrument preparation room
  • Prepare the operating theatre for surgery
  • Prepare the surgical site of each patient prior to surgery according to the hospital policy
  • Prepare patients for surgery and assist the surgeon as part of a team with clinical procedures with the support of the surgeon complete the frank. Pet Surgeons. surgical safety checklists
  • Maintain anaesthesia from the pre-operative period into the recovery period under the direction of the veterinary surgeon and communicate effectively any concerns that you may have
  • Keep an accurate anaesthetic record throughout all periods of the anaesthetic and record any complications encountered during the anaesthetic period
  • Achieve competency in all tasks performed as an anaesthesia nurse and be familiar with the pharmacology of commonly used anaesthetic drugs
  • Ensure all anaesthetic equipment is kept clean and maintained correctly and report any faults/damage to the supervisor
  • Be fully aware of all Health & Safety issues; correct use of anaesthetic machines and scavenger units, regular cleaning, maintenance & servicing of equipment etc.
  • Be responsible or allocate responsibility for specimen handling, postage and packaging to external laboratory according to the hospital SOP

Wards

  • Be actively involved in ward rounds in the morning and the afternoon when on site
  • Communicate effectively with the veterinary surgeon to implement patient care plans
  • Administer and dispense medication under the direction of the veterinary surgeon
  • Assess pain, administer analgesic therapy and assess response to therapy using a pain scoring protocol
  • Keep all treatment records/kennel charts up to date
  • Update clients when requested and be polite, courteous, pleasant and caring at all times
  • Collect and run patient samples using the in-house laboratory

Imaging

  • Be involved in high standard imaging including radiography, computed tomography (CT) and ultrasound
  • Comply with Ionising Radiation Regulations and local rules for safe use of equipment. Care of equipment and PPE

Out-of-hours nursing duties

  • Care for in patients at the hospital
  • Answer telephone calls to the hospital
  • Assist the duty veterinary surgeon with surgical procedures OOH
  • Be within a 30-minute radius of the hospital when on call on duty weekend days
  • Act quickly and decisively in a crisis
  • Be able to carry out CPCR confidently and as required
  • Be able to confidently monitor emergency and critical care patients. End of day procedures including cleaning and tidying according to protocol and preparation for the following day

Care of Surgery

  • Make sure that the hospital is kept clean, tidy and in a hygienic condition by following the infection control programme and hospital cleaning protocols
  • Maintain and clean equipment according to manufacturer guidelines and hospital standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Make sure that all equipment is kept in working order and report any faulty/damaged equipment to the supervisor. Check and order stock according to practice guidelines.
  • Be fully aware of all Health & Safety issues and hospital protocols implemented in all areas of the hospital
