Job title: Veterinary Surgeon
Location: Blackberry Farm Animal Centre, Quainton
Salary: £37,948.88 per annum
Hours: 35
Closing date: Friday 12th April 2019
Ref: VS20

Set in the beautiful Buckinghamshire countryside near the picturesque Quainton Hills, this 35 hour a week role, Monday to Friday 8.30am to 4.30pm, with no out-of-hours cover or weekend working, provides an excellent work/life balance for the right candidate wanting to work in animal welfare.

This exciting, sole charge role, delivers all aspects of veterinary care for the animals at the rehoming centre. (Dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs and poultry). Reporting to the Animal centre manager, the team of one vet and nurse means that you would have responsibility for the daily running of the facility and line management of the vet nurse.

As part of the larger Animal Centre team, this role allows you to have a unique relationship with the animals on site, from intake, rehabilitation through to rehoming, enabling a full case continuity. This role also provides access to the wider RSPCA veterinary team and therefore provides further opportunities and visits to other facilities.

Potential future development of the veterinary offering at the centre may lead to further opportunities to expand the veterinary work/team offered at the centre.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Performing consultation and medical treatment of animals according to RCVS standards
  • Undertaking overall responsibility for animals within our care in regards to animal welfare and veterinary treatment
  • Making decisions on and undertake a wide range of surgical operations and procedures
  • Undertaking continuing professional and personal development associated with the role, in accordance with RCVS guidelines of 35 hours per year

You’ll have:

  • A Postgraduate level qualification or equivalent
  • An RCVS membership
  • Two or more years post qualification experience in Companion Animal Medicine
  • The ability to perform routine consultations in 10 minutes or less and routine surgeries quickly and safely
  • A professional approach to veterinary care and clinic practice

What’s in it for you:

You’ll have an opportunity to work for the largest animal welfare charity in England and Wales.

We value and recognise our employees’ contribution and are proud to offer an extensive benefits package that includes:

  • 35 hours standard working week
  • 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays increasing to 30 days with service
  • a generous pension scheme with associated life assurance and group income protection scheme
  • access to private healthcare scheme
  • support for professional development after qualifying period and access to our employee assistance programme.

Company

Here at Blackberry Farm most of our animals have been rescued from neglect and bad treatment by their previous owners. We look after dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, farm animals and many other types of small domestic animals - at any one time we could be caring for over 200 animals.

It can take weeks and sometimes months to rehabilitate animals. Our staff and volunteers work hard to ensure every animal that comes through our doors will find their 'perfect match'.

Like little Kassy! When Kassy came into our care she was just four months old. She had some horrendous injuries, including a broken leg and a large open wound, and it took weeks of veterinary treatment and lots of TLC to make her feel better.

We successfully prosecuted the people responsible for her suffering, and they received a five-year-ban on keeping dogs.

Having spent over a year in our care while her case was decided in court, it was no surprise that Blackberry Farm staff member Bridget fell in love with Kassy and offered her a loving home. As you can see from the photo, they really are a perfect match.
