Full time, 13 months FTC, 35 hours per week
£29,617.01 per annum, (starting salary is subject to experience)

Cats Protection is the UK’s leading feline welfare charity. We now help around 193,000 cats and kittens through our network of over 250 volunteer-run branches and 36 adoption centres and homing centres.

As a Behaviour Officer, you will be implementing the charities strategy on feline behaviour under the direction of the Behaviour Manager.

Main duties:
1. To work with the Behaviour Manager to implement the existing Cats Protection strategy on behaviour and lead the charity on feline behaviour matters in the absence of the Behaviour Manager.

2. To promote the uniform policies, protocols and strategies in order to ensure consistent high standards of behavioural understanding, and care and welfare of cats in CP branches and adoption centres, and to ensure appropriate homing while still maintaining effective control of infectious disease.

3. To work with the Learning and Development team to develop blended learning training programmes on feline behaviour for CP employees and volunteers across the UK to upskill their knowledge and expertise.

4. To provide advice and support on feline behaviour cases for employees, volunteers, and members of the public.

5. To evaluate and improve existing methods of monitoring and recording the number and nature of behavioural issues resulting in cats being relinquished or returned to CP and occurring while in CP care, and monitoring cases where the Behaviour team has contributed to the resolution of issues.

6. To promote the importance and impact of behaviour on feline welfare and on the work of Cats Protection and to promote shelter medicine and the role that behaviour plays in this.

7. To represent and promote CP’s behaviour strategy nationally and occasionally internationally, at shows and events, conferences and other meetings as required.

8. To provide expert advice on behavioural issues to other stakeholders, such as Defra, regional assemblies and non-governmental organisations as necessary.

9. To raise awareness of feline behavioural issues nationally via PR and the media and to act as a spokesperson for the charity, in conjunction with other CP staff and to liaise with veterinary practices, other charities and other relevant third parties.

10. To liaise with other behaviourists and academics to communicate the latest research and developments to the rest of CP and to partake in relevant research projects as necessary.

11. To provide input into the design and set up of pens and adoption centres and their environmental enrichment to provide optimal conditions for cats in the rescue scenario.

12. To provide guidance on merchandising and advertising from a behavioural perspective where necessary.

In common with all posts, ensure compliance with Cats Protection’s policies and procedures, statutory obligations and best practice, and to undertake such other duties as may be reasonably required by the Chief Executive. This job description may be subject to review in the light of the developing organisation and in consultation with the post holder.

You will need to have a degree in animal behaviour or an equivalent professional qualification. You will ideally have an accreditation with a recognised organisation such as APBC however this is desirable.

Closing Date: 24 February 2019
Interview Date: 07 March 2019
