Job Details

leonardLeonard Brothers Veterinary Centre are recruiting for our expanding practice.

Our 2 site practice (Whitchurch and Wistaston) is expanding this summer with a new site in Nantwich. We are looking for a vet with some experience to help at one of our current sites and join an established team.

We are an independent practice and are a member of XL vets.

We do run our own out of hours service, but the rota is not too bad. We do one night on call every 2 weeks and 1 in 10 weekends on call. We monitor the number of call outs we get and we expect a call out every other night during the week and 4 or 5 call outs over a weekend. So that’s only one call out a month in the week and a few calls on your 1 in 10 weekends. There are about 2 extra Saturday mornings per vet per year which are extra to the on call weekends.

We are open 8.30 to 18.30 during the week, and 8.30 to 12.30 on Saturday morning. Most of our vets work a 4 day week and can expect a 5.30 finish on 2 of those days.

Our ideal candidate would have at least 2 years experience in small animal work and would want to work a 4 day week, although there is plenty of scope for flexibility in this.

Our practice core values are at the end of the advert, and can be summarised in 2 simple goals:

1. We want to provide excellent service to all of our clients and their pets, and
2. We want to enjoy coming to work every day

leonard 2If these values resonate then keep reading...

At the moment we have 12 vets in our team, and amongst them we have 2 advanced practitioners in surgery, 1 in dermatology and 1 in internal medicine. We also have a certificate holder in cardiology and vets studying for internal medicine and ophthalmology certificates.
This gives a lot of experience and knowledge which we use to help the entire team. We are all constantly learning from each other via our wattsapp group for case help as well as our clinical and curry nights every 2 months which are now supplemented with evening medicine clubs and the very new morbidity and mortality club which sounds scary but is a chance for us to share things that didn’t go well and discuss ways to help future cases.

We would be delighted to support you through a certificate, and would be equally delighted if you already have one. However there is also very much a place for someone who wants to consolidate general practitioner status and learn more and improve your role as a GP.

We very much see ourselves as a first opinion practice. Although lots of us hold certificate, we are all still working as GPs and all still see lots of booster consultations and still all do routines. Any trickier cases are then kept internal, either with an internal referral or by getting someone with more experience to scrub in with you or to help with the echo etc. There are not many cases we need to refer externally.

All of our appointments are now 15 minutes as a minimum and this has made a big change to our stress levels and service levels since increasing from 10 minutes. It’s far nicer for us all.

2019 is an exciting year for Leonard Brothers as not only will we be opening our new practice in Nantwich, we are also expanding our site at Whitchurch. In the 15 years since we opened we have gone from 2 to 4 consult rooms and now need more. Our expanded practice will increase consult room numbers, expand the waiting room, create an extra theatre, double our dental capacity, increase kennelling and improve our offices and staff room. It’s a busy but exciting time.

What about the area of the country? I moved to Shropshire 11 years ago to come and work here and didn’t know a huge amount about it. I can say that it’s a lovely place to live and work and also to bring up my young family. Folk here are by and large friendly and down to earth. And they love their pets. (We have 35% of all pets in the health club and high levels of insured patients). Shropshire is pretty rural and is in fact the least populous county - so no more traffic jams. Whitchurch is a market town with about 10,000 population. Nantwich is a larger town with a slightly more “Cheshire” feel and Wistaston is a small village between Crewe and Nantwich. Local schools are OFSTED outstanding. We are a few miles from North Wales, so if outdoor pursuits are your thing then there is plenty to do.

We will pay a competitive salary, but that does obviously depend on experience, it could be up to £60k for an experienced certificate hold.

Have a read of our 4 core values and look at our website and FB pages, if this looks like the sort of job for you please contact me.
