Company
Troytown GreyAbbey Equine Veterinary Services was establised in 2013, following the merger of Troytown Equine Hospital and Grey Abbey Veterinary Hospital. The company combines the expertise of both practices for the benefit of all clients and patients. We are at the forefront of the rapid development of new equipment and in the diagnosis and treatment of equine injury and disease. Our aim is to provide a top quality cost-effective service tailored to every client and patient.
Troytown was established by Mr Stan Cosgrove when he moved his veterinary premises from Lislee House in the centre of Kildare Town to a new site on the Green Road in the late 1970's. The equine hospital was world renowned for its pioneering work in colic surgery and bone repair. The hospital continued its work through the 1980's and 1990's with the expertise of many top class equine vets. In 1997 Hugh Dillon became a partner, followed by Warren Schofield in 2000 and Michael Sadlier 2002.
Through these times the hospital invested heavily in equipment and expertise. It is the only site in Ireland with a bone scanning (Nuclear Scintigraphy) unit which was set up in 2001. In 2002 a high speed treadmill was established for the diagnosis of wind conditions, and still is the only private practice in the world to have such a unit. A number of years ago an MRI unit was built and is the only one in the island of Ireland and one of only a few worldwide. In addition to investigative and diagnostic equipment significant advances in surgical therapeutic equipment are being continually made. These included laser surgery, orthopaedic surgery, shockwave and biological therapies.
The hospital has carried on Mr Cosgrove’s work with treating colic and bone injuries, operating regularly on many high profile horses as well as children’s ponies, and the occasional zebra. Troytown was again innovative with setting up a foal intensive care unit.
In 2008 Troytown Equine Hospital was given a special merit award by the Blue Cross for its work with horses.
Troytown has provided a first opinion practice to all range of clients in the Kildare area from locally owned sporthorses and ponies, to his Highness the Aga Khan. It has also offered a referral service to emergency and also elective cases from all around the country.
Grey Abbey Equine Hospital was established in 1991, in the heart of Kildare, by Paul Traynor and John Stafford. Servicing the whole of Kildare, Offaly, Laois, Carlow, parts of Meath and Dublin primarily as an ambulatory practice.
In 1999, they moved premises, establising an equine hospital with 12 boxes for inpatients, including 3 intensive care boxes, a surgical suite, a full in-house laboratory and pharmacy. Grey Abbey Small Animal Hospital was also established at this time.
In 2005 Bridget McGing joined the practice as Partner, bringing extensive experience in mare fertility and stud management.
Serving both public and private studs as well as top racehorse trainers, sports horse breeders and eventers, Grey Abbey continued to grow and develop treating each and every patient as if they were their own.
