  • Would you like to work in a tier 3 hospital with a caring and supportive team who will notice and appreciate your effort?
  • Do you have at least two years experience in UK small animal practice?

If so, then please read on, we think might have a job that would excite you…

About Us
We are Oakmount Veterinary Centre. A small animal practice in Burnley that achieved the top tier Veterinary Hospital status from the RCVS. Which means we have the best equipment, team and processes in place to deliver outstanding pet care.

We’re really proud of what we do and how we do it, for our patients, but also for each other.

To that end you can expect to work in one of the UK’s best equipped hospitals alongside either other vets. You will be supported by an awesome, and much loved nursing team. You can expect to be supported and encouraged to work cases up to a high standard, and you can expect a case volume that allows you to grow as a veterinarian, without breaking you mentally or physically.

On that note, there is always a support network there and at least one other vet, we never leave our vets (or anyone else) out on limb.

Here are some of the technologies we’ve invested in: (Don’t worry if you don’t know how to use them all, we’ll happily teach you).

Ultrasound, rigid laparoscopy, digital x-ray, digital dental x-ray, endoscope, tonometer pen, capnograph, infusion pump, syringe drivers, ECG, Doppler, Radiosurgery, cryosurgery, Idexx blood analyser - Catalyst, Vetlyte, Procyte, Snap reader. Microscope, centrifuge, hydrotherapy treadmill.

About You
You will have at least two years of clinical practice under your belt and become confident in your abilities to communicate with clients and perform much of the day to day work of a small animal vet.

You’ll have a genuine fondness for people and be able to work well with clients and staff to achieve good outcomes. We don’t expect you are a UN negotiator, but you’ll be able to work through the challenges that inevitably occur is busy hospitals and still be mates at the end of the day.

You’ll also have a desire to grow and be the type of person who seeks out feedback and opportunities to develop. We’ll definitely be happy to support you with this as long as our goals are joined up - for example one of our vets are studying for their Cert AVP, so we provide time off and financial support to help them be successful.

You’ll be the sort of person who is flexible. Therefore, occasionally, if a case needs a little more attention or a rota goes sideways you are happy to get the job done or help a colleague out. This doesn’t happen often because we schedule very carefully to make sure you have a life away from work. As you’ve probably noticed in veterinary medicine, not everything is under our control, so having a team who “have each other’s back” is very important to us and helps us to enjoy a happy culture - and we will always make sure you get time back, or money and genuine gratitude when this happens.

About The Role
You’ll need to be able to do the following to be successful in this role:

  • Deliver empathetic, trust-building consultations for wellness and ill/injured animals
  • Demonstrate critical thinking and decision making skills to create and implement diagnostic and therapeutic treatment plans
  • Dentistry - we use dental x-rays, perform extractions using surgical technique, and will teach you how to do this if you don’t know yet
  • Surgical skills - neutering, lump removal wound repair are the core skills we need. If you can do more or want to learn more that is a bonus
  • maging skills - basic abdominal and thoracic radiograph interpretation
  • Ultrasonography is a bonus that would be highly regarded
  • Ability to build trusting relationships quickly and have high emotional intelligence
  • Good at “vet admin” (note keeping, client call backs and billing)

You will be working the following rota pattern:
- Working a 4 day week with 1:3.5 weekends averages a 40 hour week.

There is no OOH with this role, but as a Veterinary surgeon working within an RCVS accredited practice you will be responsible for delivering exceptional overnight care to our hospitalised patients working with our team who remain on site 24 hours a day.

What Do Our Team Say?
Here’s what one of our current vet assistant said “I really like working here, I don’t feel stressed and I’m working with people who want to achieve the same things I do. If more practices worked the way Oakmount do, then I think we’d have a much happier vet profession.” - Dr Jennifer.

Company

Originally the practice mainly dealt with farm animals but also on a smaller scale, provided care for companion pets. Then in 1998 the large animal side of the business was passed over to our neighbouring practice to allow us to focus on providing veterinary care for companion animals.

In May 2001 we moved into larger premises in Trafaglar Street. This is at the crossroads of two of the main thoroughfares into Burnley. Our new practice is three times larger, in terms of floor area, with two operating theatres and much improved facilities for our in-patients. Our reception area has the added benefit of being easily accessible by less mobile clients and their pets.

With changes in the nature of the types of pets owned by the Burnley community, we evolved into a companion animal practice. We also treat a varied number of birds from budgerigars to parrots and sparrowhawk to owls. To ensure we offer our clients and patients good quality care and service, our vets and nurses regularly undertake further training to keep their skills up to date.

We offer a blood test to all patients that require general anaesthetic, just as you would have received when admitted for surgery in a human hospital. These important blood tests have revealed several cases of sub-clinical illness which has allowed us to change our routines to even further reduce the risk facing patients that undergo operations. We do charge for these optional tests but firmly believe that this added expence is well worth it for the health of our Very Important Patients (vip's).
