Job Details

alma 1Permanent, full-time vet required for happy, independent 100% small animal practice in North Yorkshire.

The Practice
Our long established, single-site practice in Scarborough has a supportive, experienced team. We have a good reputation locally for down to earth, quality care. The vacancy is due to the retirement of one of our vets. There are currently 2 full-time vets who are partners in the practice and a part-time vet who also shares the weekend rota. Our new vet would be in addition to this. We have a great practice manager and nursing team with a qualified VN as well as 2 full-time and one part-time nursing assistants. We are RCVS accredited and have a close association with local animal charities, including the RSPCA who have a cattery based at our surgery. We like to encourage continuity of patient care with the same vet dealing with a particular case throughout.

alma 2As a relatively small practice our out of hours is quiet. We are exploring options for reducing OOH although can’t currently promise less than the advertised amount. We can promise the rota is fairly shared and we can be pretty flexible with days off to fit around family or hobbies.  When you are away from the practice, the sea, Dalby Forest, North Yorkshire Moors and the Wolds are all very accessible. It’s a great area for outdoor activities with sailing, surfing, running, walking, mountain biking and horse riding all readily available. Being a popular holiday destination, there are regular concerts and festivals and lots of fantastic places to eat out. This area boasts the best fish and chips in the world. Housing is very affordable compared to other large Yorkshire towns.

alma 3The Role
Our new vet will perform first opinion consultations, surgery and occasional visits. They will share the out of hours rota (1-in-4 Fridays and weekends, with the remaining weekdays shared out 1-in-3). The duty vet is responsible for the care of any in patients.

We offer a wide variety of veterinary services and encourage discussion and clinical freedom, so our vets can pursue interests. We are looking for a general practitioner but are willing to support a specialism. All the vets share equally in consulting, surgery, weekends and out of hours cover. The regular working week is 4 days but we also give extra days which allow long (4 day) weekends off (usually every third week).

Successful Candidate
We would like someone caring, enthusiastic and friendly to fit into our team.  Experience is an advantage but we are willing to support and encourage a graduate or someone returning from a career break while they find their confidence. It is more important to us our vets work things up properly and offer good quality service than sales targets or speed. We are also open to ideas to expand the services we offer so if you have an ambition or interest that could be great for our practice too.

alma 4The Package
Salary will depend on experience, we are keen to find someone who wants to stay with us and we know a generous salary will help. We also offer supported and funded CPD, VDS cover, RCVS, BSAVA and BVA fees. In addition to the regular weekdays off as part of your rota we also offer 5 weeks holiday and any bank holidays worked will earn in lieu days off. We can help with housing if required and can either pay mileage for your own vehicle or offer a company car if preferred. Our independence from large companies means there is potential for a partnership or directorship in the future and our location allows an excellent quality of life. Our ethos is that all the staff in our practice should have the support they need to achieve a happy work-life balance.
