The In-vivo Science and Delivery department is responsible for delivering high quality studies to support the progression of medicines throughout the research and development process. The successful candidate will work in a small team of 12 to 15 people within a department of 80 staff working across out Stevenage and Ware sites. They will continue to develop the technical skills required to deliver animals studies, ensuring the highest standards of animal care and welfare, compliance and model development.

Job purpose:
To be able provide in-vivo science technical skills, with an emphasis to develop strong surgical and anaesthesia experience, via a Home office personal licence (PIL), to a variety of therapeutic areas under the direction and support of a veterinary surgeon or in-vivo scientist.

Key responsibilities:
Collaborate with toxicologists, biologists and program teams to understand in-vivo model intent and then work in partnership to prepare and deliver a variety of in-vivo studies.

  • Develop an understanding of in-house in vivo capabilities and a network of scientists and experts aligned with such work.
  • Develop the ability to deliver recovery surgical models using aseptic technique and provide pre, peri and post-operative care.
  • Practical experience of working in a surgical environment, including anaesthesia monitoring and or performing surgery is desirable but full training will be given.
  • Skills to carry out technical procedures on animals for the delivery on in-vivo studies utilising a Personal Licence is desirable, but full training will be provided where this needs to be developed further.
  • Develop skills to act as the single point of contact for studies, working with the Study Director take accountability for appropriate conduct of the in-vivo phase of studies.
  • Review, plan and conduct/oversee in-vivo experimental studies with a focus on quality, repeatability and value to program progression.
  • May identify new scientific opportunities for in-vivo model optimization/refinement.
  • Carry out experiments with the ability to utilize new procedures and adopt methods from literature.
  • Work flexibly within a large in-vivo department as a team member and key point of contact for the groups they support/are responsible for.
  • Responsible for delivering studies within the resource available, working with Team Coordinators to ensure scheduling is timely and accurately resourced.
  • Assume responsibility for animals on which licensed procedures are performed, ensuring personal authority and competency in the relevant techniques.
  • Liaise and communicate effectively with other key personnel to effectively deliver in-vivo studies.
  • Ensure that all work is performed in a safe manner and adhere to current codes of practice e.g. Home Office, SOPs, Company codes of practice, COSHH assessments and Local Rules.
  • Be fully aware of the standards of housing, care and welfare required by the Home Office and other regulatory/accrediting bodies, and by GSK, and apply them
  • Apply appropriate levels of checks and examinations to adequately assess animal health and welfare and act on findings by applying corrective measures and reporting to responsible individuals
  • Flexibility to work at both GSK sites in Hertfordshire to meet business requirements

Why You?
Basic qualifications:
Relevant Level 3 National qualification or equivalent e.g. Veterinary Nursing Diploma, Diploma in Laboratory Animal Science, Science based A levels In depth experience of working with animals in a laboratory or veterinary environment, able to demonstrate a strong passion for learning and broadening their experience. Demonstrate capability to learn new skills and have experience of asepsis, anaesthesia and pre/post op care. Ideally hold a Personal Licence and ability to co-ordinate and work in small teams in the delivery of studies. Excellent communication skills.

Preferred qualifications:
Relevant Level 5 National Qualification or equivalent in Veterinary Nursing, Laboratory Animal Science or other Science based qualification.
