Job Details

Barrmore Vets, owned by Giles and Emma, is a small animal practice in the heart of the fantastic community of Llanharan, South Wales and one of the few remaining independents in the area. We plan to stay that way.

Giles, the Practice Director, qualified from Liverpool in 1999. After gaining valuable experience at various practices across South Wales, he developed an interest in small animal medicine and soft tissue surgery, like BOAS. When the previous owner retired in 2014, Giles and Emma seized the opportunity to purchase the practice. Since then, we've significantly upgraded the practice, including a complete renovation in 2016. We’re always looking for ways to improve our services and encourage our team's professional development, which includes supporting certificates or further study. We also continually invest in new equipment, such as digital and dental X-ray and Doppler ultrasound.

Barrmore Vets Ltd

We couldn't be prouder of our supportive and experienced team, who constantly strive to provide the best possible care for our patients and clients. Andra, who joined the team in 2018, has just completed her GP certificate in small animal medicine. David joined us in 2021 and enjoys all aspects of veterinary, especially surgery and dentistry. Sadly for us, David is relocating, so we are looking for an experienced vet to join our team and contribute their skills, enthusiasm and ideas to help us continue providing excellent care.

“Although I'm moving out of the area, I've loved working at Barrmore Vets. It's a fun, supportive team with a committed clientele/ fanbase. Clients are keen to work up cases but have realistic expectations, the equipment is excellent, and everyone is open to discussing cases and keen to see the best possible outcomes for the patients.” David MRCVS

“I first started in Barrmore Vets 6 years ago and found a small friendly practice which grew over the years. Just after one year, I relocated with my husband back home but couldn't settle, so we came back, and I returned to the same team. There is clinical freedom in the practice but also support when needed.” Andra MRCVS

For more complex cases, we benefit from the expertise of visiting specialists and advanced practitioners, including Rata Vet Surgery, who enable us to keep complex orthopaedic cases in-house along with ophthalmology services. We are also lucky to have Esther Barrett of Wales and West Imaging to assist us with more in-depth ultrasounds.

Barrmore Vets Ltd

We are a nurse training practice with an excellent team of RVNs and SVNs with various interests; Sian is a highly experienced Head Nurse, and Alicia has a degree in animal behaviour. We also have a fantastic reception team to keep everything running smoothly. Most days, they are ‘helped’ by Bert and Pip (Giles and Emma’s tenacious Border Terriers). Bert specialises in chasing squirrels, encouraging everyone to play ball, and helping Pip, who is blind, find the most comfortable spot to relax and snooze.

We’re a very family-orientated practice and understand the importance of work-life balance. Our vets work a 4-day week with just 1:3 Saturday mornings only (8.30-12 – consult only). You will have an equal share of the consulting and operating duties, meaning you can develop your skills and interests in all areas. There is no sole charge, so you always have someone available to discuss a case and bounce ideas off. Our out-of-hours are outsourced to Valley Vets, who also take care of any inpatients, meaning your weekends, nights and bank holidays are free to enjoy.

We’re a friendly and sociable team who enjoy spending time together, whether catching up over lunch or sampling someone’s latest baking triumph. During the festive season, we all got into the holiday spirit by decorating the practice, organising a Secret Santa and sporting our best Christmas jumpers. We love celebrating both the big and small occasions together and had a wonderful time marking our 10th anniversary in the summer with curry and cake!
